At the time that the space shuttle programme was interrupted after the Challenger accident, only three future mission patches had been approved. Of those, STS-61E had been produced in very small numbers, but STS-61F and STS-61G never saw the light of day.Erik van der Hoorn produced embroidered versions of the two designs quite a number of years ago. Now, after revisiting the original art, Spacepatches.nl has produced a new set of 'reproductions.' Similarly, the original Mir EO-24 patch was produced at the time of the mission (1997) by Planeta Zemlya in very small numbers. At the request of Pavel Vinogradov, Spacepatches.nl produced a reproduction of the patch; like the original, embroidered on black felt. Can I ask if the STS-61F and 61G patches still have a hallmark on them as on the original one had from Erik van der Hoorn? |

No hallmark, as the original artwork also does not have a hallmark, we made this reproduction as close to the original design as possible. |

Just for the record: the earlier version of STS-61F and STS-61G were produced by Randy Hunt somewhere around 1998, using the artwork I derived from the crew portraits (which were not available to me in high resolution at that time, so I had to guess in some places). For some reason, maybe to "thank" me for lending the artwork to him, Randy decided to include my initials... this was certainly not my choice. An earlier Mir EO-24 replica patch was available from Stewart Aviation - using artwork I derived from a NASA Television video still provided to me by NASA JSC television technician Andrew Parris. Again, I had to guess in some places and also, I did not have much experience with digital art, so the result was a bit primitive. For the new patch we now made for Pavel, we were lucky to find the original Planeta Zemlya art. We combined that art with the actual looks of the embroidered Planeta Zemlya patch. |

My STS-61-F and G "reproduction" patches arrived along with the Mir-24 reproduction patch – they all show spacepatches.nl's high quality and attention-to-detail that always produces great patches! The 61-F and G patches are a definite improvement over the "original" Randy Hunt versions – both of which are in my collection.I am curious though. The Mir-24 reproduction was prompted by Pavel Vinogradov's request; what prompted the "reproduction" of the 61-F and G patches? |

Thanks Jacques. I too just received my 61F and 61G patches. That along with my replica 61E and my tabbed Jarvis - Walker 51G patch are great treasures in my collection. |

We (spacepatches.nl) had sent some of the patches to Rick Hauck, whose uncle Stephen Hustvedt designed both patches.Rick liked the patches very much and was very pleased to receive them. Sadly though Stephen Hustvedt died in 2005. |
