Due to the fact that here are also some very talented graphical artists I would like to ask you for your help and I would be happy for every single answer...The National Surveillance Organisation (NSO) is a delegated institution by the European Space Agency ESA. This Organization executes the quality surveillance operations in the frame of the Ariane 5 and VEGA/Verta program and can be seen as a interface between industry and space agency. Each country which contributes to these programs do have their own NSO representants who are providing the surveillance operations within the production and testing of equipments and components for the a.m. products as well as consultancy in all quality and product assurance toppics. Within these tasks the German NSO is also mainly involved in the surveillance operations of the Ariane 5 Upper Stage integration and testing, as well as in the manufactirung of the boosters, main engine, orbital maneuvering systems of the VEGA launcher and many many other components to secure a top quality. Due to the new orientation of the European Space Program with the upcoming Ariane 6, a new dedicated own insignia is in need. The current version was just adapted from the already existing Ariane 5 PA insignia. Its very simple but nevertheless a very clear design. So the new insignia should also be also very clear... It should include the Ariane 5, Ariane 6 and the VEGA launcher. (A6 in the middle.) For a slight orientation it should be something like this: ...but you can blow us away with your ideas. I would ask you guys for your help. Do you have any ideas or design recommendations? Or would you like to design a insignia for us? Please note that this is a non profit(!) ask for help, anyway your idea or design might become our new "flagship" and you would be than somehow a part of this! Thanks in advance. (As a small thank you I would like to offer the "winner" a small piece of memento taken from an actual Ariane launcher...) |

Rocket Chris, thank you for posing this challenge to us members. I've been thinking about what to include, but first I had to really understand what the NSO meant. I come from the intelligence background and when you say surveillance I immediately think of our National Reconnaissance Office and launching of spy satellites. With that said, I found a document from Germany that briefly explains the NSO function.Taking into account that the NSO is a multi-country organization/agreement the inclusion of flags of each country could be something to think about. The other aspect is the quality assurance and safety that represents the NSO. This could be symbolized with a hard hat or the logo for European Safety. With all these logos it would get pretty cluttered, so these are some thoughts. Thanks again for the opportunity and I look forward to seeing what others have to suggest and I'll pass along any other thoughts. |

You need to understand that NSO in Europe is rather a term for a certain function than a institution. The function is to perform oversight over technical activities performed by the industry to assure the quality. Each souvereign country has its own NSO, which may be executed by a national institution. In Germany this is for example the IABG, a national test laboratory establishment. The NSO is also used to protect intellectual property. If an industry in one country has a technical problem but does not want to disclose all details (e.g. of a sophisticated manufacturing process) to its project customer, which is another industry in another country, then the details are checked by the local NSO, actions may be agreed to improve the situation, and the NSO reports to the foreign customer only in general terms without disclosing the industrial secrets. Thus, you may need to mention a lot of European institutions on the logo, an explanation is given in an online IAF paper. |

Thanks for your answers guys. Actually there is no deadline specified but I would appreciate having a logo by summer. The text required is "National Surveillance Organisation", due to the fact that it should be a insignia for the German department, Germany should also somehow be included. quote: Originally posted by JBoe: Taking into account that the NSO is a multi-country organization/agreement the inclusion of flags of each country could be something to think about.
That's right and might be a second approach for a general NSO patch (what would include the Soyuz launcher also, but not for Germany). Anyway the European Safety logo has nothing in common with our work. Than the logo of IABG as delegated executive would make more sense. quote: Originally posted by Dietrich: You need to understand that NSO in Europe is rather a term for a certain function than a institution. You are absolutely right! No better depiction possible. |

So the first sketches and designs have reached us and we would like to thank so far the participants for their ideas. For those who already have presented their ideas please, be patient as long as the NSO team will decide about the most suitable insignia. Anyway the "challenge" is still open and we're still curious to see your ideas. Thanks in advance. |

I too would be interesting in a future purchase. Speaking of purchases, I really like the "Launches Speak Louder than Words" patch and wouldn't mind purchase one. Any ideas on how to get one? |

We're still waiting for your input. As far as now just two sketches have reached us.For sure we could think about offering this patch for the public. Anyway the "Launches are Louder than Words" patch above was just a very limited giveaway patch at an Arianespace event. I guess there were not more than 100 pcs., which never were intended to public offer. |

So here we are with a concept: It should look somehow look like this. One cS member who posted us an idea included a shield. This idea was great and the intention of this shield (to protect or secure) is awesome. Now we thought what about such an insignia: We need now your skills... this in a vector graphic like the Arianespace patch above. The colors should be as in the sketch. What do you think? |

No, due to the fact that the idea of the shield came from one cS member. And this is just our idea now. The competition is still open to beginning of April. |
