Looking through some new stock from AB Emblem, I came across this on the reverse of the Apollo program patches.

Will they now appear on all new stock? Are others already out there? Will this create a new collecting area for patch collectors?

I noticed that two recent ISS Expedition patches that were produced by AB at the end of June of this year, no longer had the 'Made in USA' label with product code on the back - instead, the label was now on the cellophane packaging holding 10 patches each (the coating on the back of the patches was clear though).

No idea if this is a trend, with production dates and codes no longer required for individual patches, or just something unique to these particular batches (which were not meant for commercial use).

I checked with my representative at AB Emblem and the patches will now have the backing that is pictured on this thread.

Can someone tell me what the backs of the ISS expedition (41 through 46 and the 1-Year) patches now available look like? Any with the new 'Made in USA' pattern? Or just clear with production code/date sticker?

Received all of them yesterday and all backsides are clear with a few having the 'made in USA' stickers. None of them have the new backside coatings.

Of the seven ISS Expedition patches I received at the U.S. address I use, only the ISS-43 patch has the new multi coloured 'Made In U.S.A.' and U.S. flags backing.

The Exp. 43 patches that will be used on the Kentavr 'ceremonial' suits aboard the ISS (although it will of course not be visible to anyone) will have clear backings with embedded 'made in U.S.A.'/217945/111320 labels. I do not know what will be on the three Sokol suits.

Three of the ISS Expedition patches I've bought have no embedded white labels on the backs. ISS-41, ISS-42 and ISS-44.

The ISS-45, ISS-46, plus the one year patches do have embedded labels on them.

The Expedition 41, 42 and 46 patches flown aboard ISS on the Kentavr suits have embedded labels. Kentavr flown Expedition 44 and 45 have no labels. I do not know if anyone is interested in details like these, but I could make a full list of labels on the Expedition patches used in space.

Well, only my 42 patch has a label. None of the others do.

Here are the AB Emblem batches that were/are to be used used on the Russian Kentavr ISS on board suits.

In most cases, these are from the very first batches that are being produced, so it gives you an indication how the patch in your collection relates to the original patches that were manufactured for use aboard the ISS.

The information on the AB Emblem labels consists of the product number, usually folowed by production month/year and country of origin. I believe 20 = USA, 10 is China or Taiwan.

Unfortunately, with one or two exceptions, I do not have these data for the Sokol suits, because Zvezda is using a different supply route.

  • Expedition 26
    163963 B 06/10 10
Note: This was the uncorrected version (small 'e' in Kondratyev). Corrected version with 'E', probably 163963 08/10/20, was used on the Sokol suits.

  • Expedition 27
    169174 B 09/10/20

  • Expedition 28
    171113 U 11/10/20

  • Expedition 29
    171517 11/10/20

  • Expedition 30
    174586 5/11/20

  • Expedition 31
Not AB Emblem, but Spacepatches.nl version
Note: The first AB Emblem batch that would have been on the Kentavr suits if the crew had not requested an alternate version, was 180631U MADE IN USA 8/11/20

  • Expedition 32
    180683 MADE IN USA 7/11/20

  • Expedition 33
    187592U 01/18/20
Note: this is a typo, it should have read 01/12/20

  • Expedition 34
    188641U 01/18/20
Note: this is a typo, it should have read 01/12/20

  • Expedition 35
    178084 MADE IN USA 8/11/20

  • Expedition 36
    201910 MADE IN USA 10/12/20
Note: Patches from this batch (with corrected name of Misurkin) were also on the Sokol suits during launch, but without any backing material and thus without a label; AB Emblem patches with the wrong spelling of Misurkin were never prepared for flight; The first version without names had already been prepared for the Kentavr suits when it was decided to change the artwork, this was batch 182346U MADE IN USA 8/11/20

  • Expedition 37
Not AB Emblem, but Spacepatches.nl version.
Note: First AB Emblem batch that would have been on the Kentavr suits if the crew had not requested an alternate version, was 200033 MADE IN USA 02/1320; Rejected AB Emblem patch first batch (shield shape) was 192166 MADE IN USA 06/12/20 but was never prepared for flight.

  • Expedition 38
    204271 MADE IN USA 2/1320

  • Expedition 39
    198703 MADE IN USA 5/13/20

  • Expedition 40
    212904 MADE IN USA 4 13 20

  • Expedition 41
    211609 MADE IN USA 5/ 13/20

  • Expedition 42
    212626 MADE IN USA 4 13 20
Note: this is a typo, it should have read 7 13 20

  • Expedition 43
    217945 MADE IN USA 111320
Note: Version that would have been on the Kentavr suits if Lonchakov had not been replaced, was 213238 MADE IN USA 4 13 20. As with Expedition 42, this is a typo: it should have read 7 13 20

  • Expedition 44
No label, but from batch 233019 MADE IN USA 6/14 20 (label was on outside of celophane packaging holding 10 patches each)

  • Expedition 45
No label, but from batch 233137 MADE IN USA 6/14 20
(label was on outside of celophane packaging holding 10 patches each)

  • Year in space
    235564 MADE IN USA 0814 20

  • Expedition 46
A mix of three versions was delivered to the Kentavr factory and prepared for flight in mid-October 2014:
    235638 MADE IN USA 0814 20,
235638 MADE IN USA 08/14 20 and without label. Less than two weeks later, AB Emblem was ordered by the Astronaut Office to cease production of the patch.

Newly produced flight patches: 240929 MADE IN USA 01/06 (production code probably changed to month/day)

  • Expedition 47
    242279 MADE IN USA 07/17
Note: produced mid July 2015. An earlier batch (02/1520, produced in February 2015) does exist, but was rejected for flight use due to a quality issue.

A very interesting list Erik, many thanks for that.

I have some AB Emblem patches with a 40 after the date (I've not seen a 30 though).

The 1 year ISS patch is 235564 08 14 20.

Some days ago I received some Expedition patches from AB and I noticed that one Expedition 46 has a label 235638 6/30.

One Expedition 43 has the backing as shown on top in the first post.

And some other Expedition patches (39, 41, second 43, 44 and 45) do have no label at all.

It seams like AB Emblem are not producing the current batch of ISS Expedition patches with the new backing. I have just acquired ISS-44 dated 03/15 20, and ISS-45 dated 04/15 20 with the old plain backings.

It will be interesting to see what backing AB Emblem uses for the revised design of the ISS-46 patch.

It is looking like AB Emblem has abandoned their new logo pattern space patch backing. I've not seen any new ISS Expedition patches with this backing. The last one that I know of was the early ISS Expedition 43 revised crew patches.

I have also seen this backing used on some shuttle patches. The 1981-2011 End Of The Space Shuttle Program commemorative patch, along with the STS-78, and STS-42* patches. (These patches were on sale at the KSC Visitor Complex gift shop in their type 6A, cellophane sales packets).

If anyone else knows of any other shuttle or ISS patches with this backing on, could they list them here, many thanks.

Update: STS-124 and STS-95 patches have also been found from KSC Visitor Complex gift shop.

Update: A slightly different version of this multi emblem/flag backing has been used on the STS-42* patch only (the Scout Emblem instead of the U.S. flag), but again these have either sold out or been withdrawn.

Update 12-03-15: STS-6 and STS-31 patches have also now been found in type 6A KSC sales packets.

Update 12-23-15: STS-106 has just been found in a type 6A KSC sales packet (just one example only).

I have now been told by a representative from AB Emblem that this multi coloured flag and emblem backing to NASA patches was purely experimental only. Unfortunately this experiment was unsuccessful, so very few production runs were completed for NASA patches.

The only NASA patches that are known with this backing are;

  • 3" Apollo Program
  • ISS-43 (revised crew)
  • STS-6 (Some have been found with the light blue and navy blue areas reversed on the front of this patch), see image below.
  • STS-8
  • STS-31
  • STS-42 (mostly with the Scouts emblem error)
  • STS-49
  • STS-66
  • STS-78
  • STS-95 (a few with the Scouts emblem error)
  • STS-106
  • STS-124
  • End of the Shuttle Program 1981-2011 (full size 5" version)
All the shuttle patches were either sold in sales packets at the KSC Visitor Complex gift shop, or Shop NASA at JSC in Houston, Texas. The ISS-43 and Apollo Program patches were only sold by AB Emblem direct.

If anyone knows of any other NASA patches with this experimental backing on, please could they let us know. Many thanks.

Update: I have now been told there are the following NASA patches to add to the list above;

  • Mercury 4
  • Mercury 9 19514 USA 7/14/20 (date code on cellophane packet only)
  • Gemini Program
  • Gemini 3 15926 USA 9/14 20 (date code on cellophane packet only)
  • Gemini 6
  • Orion Program (triangular patch)
  • NASA SCA The Final Mission, Discovery, Enterprise, Endeavour.
Many thanks for this information Simon.

Take a look at the STS-95 patch on the right, it has both the Scouts emblem error to the right hand side, and the correct coloured U.S. flag and emblem at the base (as you look at it). The rest of the patch just has the white base coating on it. (This is the only patch I know of with this error on it.)

The STS-95 patch on the left is what it should look like if all is correct.

Update 04-13-16: and 04-27-16 and 04-01-18:
Another patch has been found with this experimental backing.

  • 3" Shuttle Program patch (on 04-01-18)
Update February 5th 2020:
Another three patches have been found in a type 5 Challenger KSC set of ten souvenir size patch set. Three of the ten patches have the experimental multi coloured backings. Five have embedded labels, and two are without any labels on. The three patches that have the experimental backings are;
  • STS-51B (Spacelab 3)
  • STS-51F (Spacelab 2)
  • STS-51L (Teacher in space)
The five that have the embedded labels on are;
  • STS-6 49521 USA 12/13 20
  • STS-7 49589 (Taiwan?) 10/11 10
  • STS-41C 52250 USA ??/1320
  • STS-41G 54023 USA 1/13/20
  • STS-61A 61749 USA 8 13 20
The remaining two without the labels on are;
  • STS-8 (50815)
  • STS-41B (52224)

After over six years another (the 25th) one of the AB Emblem NASA patches with the summer 2014 experimental multi coloured backings has come to light. It is the ISS Expedition 41 patch, found by Liem this week.

Previously the only Expedition patch to have the multi coloured experimental backing on it, up till now, was the ISS-43 revised crew patch. I've only ever seen two examples of these, they are very rare. Now that the Expedition 41 patch has been found, could this mean the Expedition 42 patch might also exist too?

Dose anyone have any others examples different from the 25 known patches found/reported so far? All 25 patches are listed above.

It was found in a lot of other ISS/Shuttle patches from around the same era from a Facebook seller in Louisiana.

All times are CT (US)
