I picked these two patches up on eBay last week, because I'm trying to put together a collection of patches associated with bases where I lived as an Air Force brat (Edwards '84-'86.)I only paid a few bucks for them, but I'm curious as to their provenance if anyone has any info. Both use the NASA "worm," so I was wondering how far back they go. |

I don't know about the years of production or use, but browsing eBay, here's a different version of the top patch (I'm thinking this one might be an older vintage, given the more accurate space shuttle): On edit: Th above patch is included in Judith Kaplan's and Robert Muniz' book, "Space Patches: From Mercury to the Space Shuttle," published in 1986 — so it at least dates back that far. |

I think the blue Dryden is a replica.I have an original one, given to me the first time I was at that facility, in the early 90s. It's hard to see in this shot, but it's sewn to my helmet bag and you can see the lettering on the NASA name is much thicker. I've compared mine to your shots up close and I think yours is either a copy or from a totally different run. |

As far as I know, the NASA "worm" logo first started appearing in early 1975. |

I bought one like the blue patch from the Dryden gift shop in December of 1981. |

NASA Dryden and NASA Ames are certainly a special patches "niche" on their own... took me long time to find the NASA KAO - Kuiper Airborne Observatory patches (C-141). |

A few more Dryden Flight Research Center related patches. The first was made by Winco International: The next three were made by AB Emblem. The third was produced in 2012.
