During the STS-80 pre-launch walkout, veteran astronaut Story Musgrave had a little fun with his uniform patch placement.

He was a real "character" in the corps and had a great sense of humor. Wonder if he ever got hassled about his wardrobe malfunction. Anyone know "the rest of the "Story"?

I can't say if it was for the same reasons, but when Story was asked to autograph a door already signed by many other astronauts, he got down on his knees, turned his head upside down and signed the door's bottom — upside down.

His explanation? In space, there is no up or down.

So true. There is only here and there, out and back, etc.

Of course, for the official STS-80 crew photo he had his name tag on "correctly". Snapped a few pics back in '96 and in this one he appears to be smiling and wondering if anyone will notice his little trick?

I was at the STS-80 launch and photographed Story during the walkout. It wasn't until after I got the image back that I noticed his name tag was upside down. That was to be his last mission because NASA was forcing him to retire. I believe he was angry because John Glenn was getting ready to fly on STS-95 and he was even older than Story. I assumed that he was showing his displeasure with NASA with the inverted name tag.

Several years later I attended a lecture that he gave and during the signing I asked if he would sign the photo upside down. He laughed and when I asked him why he wore the tag that way he replied "there is no up or down in space".

So you are correct.

Wearing nametapes upside down isn't a new thing. I've known plenty of pilots who wore them all the time like that, stating that since they spent more time inverted, it made more sense that way.

After a couple of fighter plane rides (WW2 and modern jet), I got to understand this for a while took to wearing mine upside down, too.

All times are CT (US)
