Do we know exactly when AB Emblem stopped using the Schiffli embroidery machines and went to the multi-head machines? I read that it was in the fall of 1998 with STS-88. Wondering if anyone knows more? |

If I remember correctly, I first noticed some difference with STS-87 in 1997 - it was thinner than usual, but that might have been some illusion because lots of white and a sewn border were used. Another one in which I really noticed a quality difference, was STRM mission STS-99 in 2000, maybe already 103 as well. |

Aren't there some NASA patches that still look exactly the same now with the newer Muti-Head machines as they did when they used the old Schiffli machines such as the NASA worm logo patch they still sell and the smaller 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch American flag patches? |

No, you will definitely see the difference. They switched to thinner threads and wider stitching patterns. |

I would love for someone to post a picture of a NASA worm logo patch from the 1980's or early 1990's if they have one and then one from nowadays side by side. Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think every single NASA patch that was made prior to the machine changes by AB Emblem has that 3D effect. I know a lot of them did but does anyone know which ones if any did not have a 3D effect? |

The original NASA worm worn by the astronauts was produced by Lion Brothers. Original STS-29 and STS-49 come to mind as patches that have a very nice 3D effect. |

If you go to Ron's website, spacesouppatches.com you do a side-by-side comparison between vintage and current AB emblem patches for Apollo and the Space Shuttle. |

Yeah I have been to that excellent website a few times, although he doesn't have a worm logo that the astronauts wore. They might have worn the Lion Brothers version of the worm logo but without a doubt I am sure throughout all the years the astronauts wore that patch which was (1979-1996) they also wore the AB Emblem worm logo patch as well. Besides I believe after January 1985 Lion Brothers were not even making NASA patches anymore. |

Although someone wrote on another post that they believe the first patch done on the current Multi-Head machines was STS-88. However they stated that it was the second or revised mission patch the one with Ross Newman and KPNKANEB. The original with Currie Ross Newman supposedly was done on Schiffli machines and therefore has the glossy or 3D effect like the older patches. It would be interesting to see for those who have both patches to compare them side by side and maybe we can determine if the second STS-88 mission patch was in fact the first one done on the current multi-heads. I do not have either patches yet to see for myself I am still in the process of collect shuttle patches. Thanks! |

At the time, there was no difference in embroidering techniques between the Krikalëv and 5-crew version. Again, first was probably STS-99 or 103. |

I know it is hard to tell from the pictures on the internet but I looked on eBay and one of the pictures of the STS-88 the revised/Krikalev crew patch does show a 3D effect such as the case with the Schiffli machines. |
