Lunar Legacies has recently (October 2008) listed a couple of vintage patches in their original packaging which show they were made by Cape Kennedy Medals.

Does anyone have examples of any of their other patches? It would be very nice to finally identify some of the 'unknown manufacturer' patches, and it seems clear that Cape Kennedy Medals must have produced versions of most, if not all, of the Apollo mission patches.

I seem to remember that Ken Havekotte knew the guy who ran Cape Kennedy Medals, so maybe he could help?

Yes, I am a close associate with Tom Foley of CKM and have worked with him for decades.

His company has produced crew patches and others for all U.S. manned space flights from Mercury to the current shuttles. In most cases, I probably do have samples of all his patches and of their different sizes. Some of his embroider patches may include one or more crew patch varieties, not just one, that may vary in their color uses, sizes, and soemtimes a slightly different patch design. For instance, with Apollo 11, altogther CKM probably has produced 3-5 "different" crew emblems of the official NASA design, however, there maybe slightly different varieties that were made by his firm from the late 1960s to within a few years ago.

Ken, it would be great if you could share photos of those patches. Hopefully this would put a name to many of the 'unknown manufacturer' patches out there.

A few more Cape Kennedy Medals patches have surfaced on eBay recently, mostly from Lunar Legacies.

I may be wrong, but I can't see any significant difference between CKM's Apollo 7, 8 and 13 patches and the designs recognized as those of AB Emblems. My feeling is that Cape Kennedy Medals were acting as a reseller of AB Emblems patches in these cases.

On the other hand, their Skylab II patch is quite distinctly different and also has plenty of similarities with the Skylab II wives patch which was produced by CKM. In this case I'm sure this is a patch they actually manufactured (or had manufactured) themselves.

Does anyone remember the Cape Kennedy Medals catalog from the 80's? I recall that the catalog was about 6x8 inches and just printed on plain paper. I remember seeing many drawings of alternative patches/logos that I have never seen since.

I have the STS-51L CKM patch and several others that are possibly from Cape Kennedy Medals.

Does Ken or others have any images of other CKM patches for the Apollo and shuttle patches made by CKM? Thanks!

The morning of the STS-135 landing, I visited the Foley's shop on Merritt Island and picked up a number of patches (and a job offer from Jo Foley LOL for recommending the store to a bunch of European tourists I had met). Among the items I got were a GT-9 and GT-11 patch (4", no less, along the major dimension) which were exact reproductions of the NASA-released artwork for those missions and in my opinion even more faithful to the "original" than Gene Dorr's replicas; along with a 3" STS-8 "Eyes" patch and a Ilan Ramon personal patch (the dark blue crown-shaped one with the fancy Jewish symbols).

All of these appeared to be executed as perfectly as humanly possible to the pics of the originals that I have seen. Mrs. Foley also gave me a STS-135 patch that is indistinguishable from the AB edition I bought at the Astronaut Hall of Fame gift shop (KSC sold out).

I don't know if these are examples of CKM workmanship or not — I wasn't looking for Apollo or STS stuff to compare, I wanted unique stuff — but they are extremely well-made by someone. None of them had any packaging identifying a source.

The year I lived on the Space Coast (1988-89) I bought an STS-29 patch from some local kiosk that was VERY different than the AB version, with a cut edge and twill blue body (not stitched-filled)

I suspect only the locals will know who made all these patches.
