With the number of non-aviator (either pilot or naval flight officer) Navy astronauts increasing, has anyone seen any modifications to Navy warfare emblems to reflect astronaut status. So far, a Surface Warfare qualified officer (CDR Mario Runco) and a Navy Master Diver (CAPT Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper) have flown, but I have not seen whether they have worn modified versions of their respective warfare emblems, or were they awarded Navy astronaut wings (like an aviator).

Don't forget Navy Seal Bill Shepherd who wore his badge on his Sokol suit as well as coveralls during Expedition 1.

Navy Uniform Regulations only provide for the astronaut designator to be added to the Naval Aviator and Naval Flight Officer insignia.

Why doesn't that suprise me? I think this regulation was written when only aviators were eligible to be astronauts. With submariners, divers and SEALs (thanks Tim!) going up on a regular basis, it's time for an update.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Navy Reg's concern themselves with the wearing of the appropriate badge(s) on the Navy Uniforms?

As astronauts, I would think it would be OK and photographs I've seen seem to back that up - in the wearing of their type of service badge on their flight suits and L & E suits.

True, but as good naval officers, we would ensure that what ever we are wearing, from our dress uniforms to a L&E suit, would have the correct emblem. CAPT Shepherd would not wear a SEAL emblem with an astronaut designator on it if it were not authorized to do so. Like I said, the regs just need updating to reflect non-naval aviator astronauts.
