Love the new Orion logo that was revealed today by Robert on the news portion of the site.

Is anyone else as eager as I am for official patches based on these logos? Very nice! Heck... count me in for some T-shirts too - the whole smash.

Also looking forward to it. I find it interesting how they captured the feel of the Apollo emblem while updating it.

Yeah, it does have that feel. I wonder what the three stars symbolize (other than the belt of Orion). CEV crews are going to be 6 person, are they not? Maybe the station, Moon and Mars?

I really like the Ares design and the Orion is nice too. Looking forward to adding these to the collection.

Is there any larger version of this patch and the patches for the projects? Even a vector version of them?

The Orion logo has not yet been officially released. And regarding the Ares logo, their was an internal memo circulating around NASA that specifically prohibited its appearance on publicly-accessible websites. Thus far, the only version to emerge on nasa.gov has been a small thumbnail.

I watched the press conference this afternoon about the Constellation Program. All three logos: Constellation, Ares and Orion were presented. It's interesting to note that all three have ten stars in the background. I guess that means they all tie in the work done by the ten NASA field centers involved.

They also announced that the Ares 1-1 launch is scheduled for April, 2009 from White Sands. It will use a four segmented SRB with simulated mass and structures to mock up the 5th segment as well as the upper stage, and Orion CSM.

collectSPACE: NASA officially debuts Project Orion logo
Days after confirming the project's name, NASA has released the logo for its next generation crew exploration vehicle, Orion.
The above article includes a link to the animated version of the now official Orion logo.

Tim, I just re-watched the briefing (I have it on DVD) and while you have the date correct (target April '09) the I-1 test will originate from KSC (as will all stacked test flights during the development phase). White Sands will be used to test the launch escape system only.

You are correct sir! I re-watched it Sunday and caught that. With it being taller than the STS, it ought to look very impressive indeed.

The cover of the Orion handout shows the Constellation logo. Shouldn't this be made as a patch as well?

Also, on page 9 of this handout, there's a (new?) USA logo... would make an attractive patch too!

There will likely be a Constellation patch available. (On edit: there now is.)

(As for USA's logo, permission would need to be obtained from the company first as it is not public domain art.)

I thought the Constellation program patch first came out with the Ares and Orion patches in August 2006 but reading this older thread it seems it did not come out until 2007? Does anyone remember when it came out?

The Constellation logo was introduced before the Orion and Ares logos. AB Emblem later produced all three at the same time, but that was after Countdown Creations offered Ares and Orion patches.

As was noted in August 2006, NASA had not (yet) authorized AB Emblem to produce any of the patches, as the agency's policy at that time was to keep the insignias for internal use only.

I understand a little better now. Is it still possible to get the Countdown Creations' Ares and Orion patches or just AB Emblems'? Also is the Countdown Creations Ares patch the one without the gold border? If anyone can show or state the differences between these Constellation patches that would be helpful so I or others could try to get all the different versions of Constellation program, Ares, Orion and Altair patches.

I got my Constellation, Ares and Orion patches in 2006 from Randy Hunt of Patches etc. These are the patches I now have:
  • 3 different Orion patches
  • 3 different Ares patches
  • 3 different Constellation patches
  • 3 different Exploration patches
  • 3 different Altair patches

Countdown Creations (now part of The Space Store Network) offers today only AB Emblem's versions of the Constellation Program patches.

The Countdown Creations' Ares patch made in 2006 had a solid black border. The gold border patch is AB Emblem's.

As for Randy Hunt, if recollection serves, he purchased Countdown Creations' Ares and Orion patches for resale.

Thanks guys for the help.

So then as far as NASA is concerned there are only four official Constellation patches as of now, the four released by AB Emblem, which are: the Constellation program patch, Ares project patch, Orion project patch and the Altair project patch.

At least I assume that they are the only four "official" patches to date. I do not know if you count the NASA Exploration patch as one because it is not a program or project or mission patch for that matter but of course someone correct me if I am wrong.

There is a fifth AB Emblem-produced patch, which serves as a current NASA Constellation project office logo: EVA Systems.

The Exploration insignia was phased out of use by NASA with the advent of the Constellation program.

So five patches then currently make up the Project Constellation patch collection. I wasn't too familiar with the EVA Systems Project but I have read up on it now. Thanks!

Quick question then, did AB Emblem release the first three patches (Constellation, Ares and Orion) in 2006 or was it 2007?

There are now six Constellation patches all together. Does anyone know if there is an EVA Systems lapel pin out?

An EVA Systems pin was created for team members and a new pin, produced by Winco, is expected to be introduced for sale soon.

I have a couple of quick questions about the Winco International EVA Systems lapel pin. First, do you know if it is out yet? Also I e-mailed spacestore.com and the person there was said that he did not think they were getting that pin in. If they do not carry it when it comes out do you know what other place or online store I could get this pin from?

To my knowledge, it has not yet been released, and therefore its too soon to say where it might sold.

For anyone who wants to weigh in or knows for sure, is the NASA Exploration patch part of the Constellation patch collection or is it a separate entity all together. Just not sure if I should put it in with my Constellation patches. Thanks.

The Constellation Program logo more or less replaced the Exploration emblem at NASA. Whether you choose to keep them together is really a personal choice.

I was wondering what is with the Orion patch with the white border? Anyone have that particular version? Anyone have any idea which company made it?
