I thought I'd share with the cS community my scratch built spacesuit glove. Various real gloves (Sokol and Orlan) have passed through my possession over the years, but I wanted to make something I could take to schools without the threat of damaging something highly valuable.

This is my prototype model, used to try out ideas, and I will be putting the lessons learned into the next pair.

Inside is a rubber safety glove mated to an aluminium ring, so it actually holds pressure. The finger tips are silicone, and the outer shell is nylon.

A number of Soviet glove design elements are evident. Will make for a nice educational prop.

Thanks Rick, indeed quite a few design cues taken from the Orlan glove.

I'm trying to source some rubberised material for the palms, but I can always resort to table tennis bat rubbers, pimples out!

I thought I would add a list of parts and costs for this item, I guess in support of how happy I am with the outcome!
  • 1 pair safety gloves - £3
  • 1 square meter blue fabric - £5
  • 1 tube of RTV - £4
  • 1 donor rucksack (straps) - £3

  • Aluminium rings - scrapyard find
  • Silicone tips - free samples
And about 4 hours on the sewing machine.

All times are CT (US)
