collectSPACE Apollo 13 custom LEGO minifigures mark mission's 45th anniversaryHouston, we have... Apollo 13 LEGO toy minifigures! Launched just in time for the start of the historic mission's 45th anniversary this weekend, UK-based Minifigs.me on Friday (April 10) introduced a set of four new customized minifigures replicating the Apollo 13 crew and their "failure is not an option" flight director. The 2-inch-tall (5 centimeter) toy figures are modeled after the real James Lovell, Fred Haise, Jack Swigert and Gene Kranz (rather than their movie likenesses: Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon and Ed Harris). And although small, they are fully-detailed... |

This was fun project to work on and I'm really happy with the end result. Nick at MiniFigs.Me is a real space fan which made the whole thing a pleasure.I'm hoping that if the Apollo 13 figures sell well they'll be interested in producing more crew sets over time. I already have the designs worked out so it's really a question of sales. |

The LiOH "piece" and Gene's vest are terrific details on these. |

I posted this on Facebook, but it's worth posting here: They need to make a blue flight suit for Haise so they can pair it with the LEGO shuttle (unfortunately, not a NASA-decaled one) with plane. Pairing Haise with this and maybe putting Haise's head on one of the Launch Command minifigs and you have the LEGO ALT set. |

I take the point about Haise but the demand would probably be small. If they have to make a custom figure from scratch the cost is pretty high but it can be done.Other possible variants for Apollo astronauts would be the In-Flight Coverall garments or the recovery blue flight suits with embroidered patches but again making them would be costly. For now I'm hoping that they can at least do some more Apollo crews in WSSs. Apparently the response has been pretty good so far so it's looking hopeful for at least another crew. |
