This item has a planned arrival date of May 2015.

NASA F-16A #816 was built for the USAF as 82-0976 c/n 61-569 and delivered on October 27, 1983. This aircraft was loaned to NASA in the late 1980's and registered as N816NA and used at their Dryden Flight Research Center as a chase plane during the testing of the F-16XL. When that testing ended N816NA was used as a test vehicle in their Advanced Fighter Technology Integration program (AFTI) at DFRC.

N816NA has since been retired and is on display in front of the Lockheed Skunk Works in Palmdale, California. N816NA has the distinction of being the only civilian registered F-16 in the world.

Hobby Master has also produced a NASA 1:72 scale F-15 model although the coloring on the model is very off with a high blue tint. They just became available on the market this month.

Just to note, Air & Space magazine has published an article years ago about civilians buying military jets for private use. The note above about the NASA F-16 being the only civilian registered one in the world is incorrect. There are a few privately owned and flown here in the US citizens. They have purchased them through other countries and brought them back to use. The FAA has set specific rules for such including eliminating the capability for arms and ejection seats due to the obvious safety issues that imposes.

And for those interested in the aeronautics section of NASA, look out for Monographs in Aerospace History #53 "NASA Photo One" by James Ross, foreword by Gordon Fullerton (NASA SP-2013-4553). I haven't yet seen on NASA's website.

The coloring and marking of the F-16 have changed according to this website.

Not sure where they got their information, but 816 never flew at NASA Dryden. It was originally delivered to NASA Langley then transferred to Dryden. At the time of its transfer it was still in basic F-16 gray paint. Dryden had it repainted white as part of a package deal with the Edwards AFB paint shop but it was never flown. It sat outdoors for many years before being loaned to Lockheed for display.

The owner of the HobbyMaster Collector website did some digging and found the following:
In 1991 General Dynamics F-16A 82-0976 c/n 61-569 was transferred from the 3246th Test Wing, Eglin AFB, Florida to NASA located at Langley AFB. Here it was registered as N516NA #516 where its primary NASA mission was a chase plane for the two F-16XLs. On January 10, 1993 the aircraft was re-registered as N816NA and #816 and transferred to the Dryden Flight Research Center and used for engine testing. In 2004 the aircraft was withdrawn from service and is now on display in front of the Lockheed Skunk Works in Palmdale, California.
