I thought that I would share this — just as a point of interest, especially in light of the recent success of the Rosetta spacecraft.

The first spacecraft/comet encounter was in 1985/86 with (from memory) a number of spacecraft from the USA, the Soviets and ESA. The ESA spacecraft 'Giotto' was unique in that it flew through the comet tail. It was televised by the BBC overnight as it happened.

Giotto is still out there somewhere (still working) and was last in communication in 1992.

The photos are circa 1985 and a nice 1/20 scale model of the Giotto spacecraft. It's a nice spacecraft design. The only other example I have seen was part of Patrick Moore's collection.

Just wondering if anyone has any history on this? Are there other models like this available?

Two different years and two different comets.

1985 USA's ICE encounters Comet P/Giacobinni-Zinner.

1986 World "flotilla" encounters Comet P/Halley.

In the 1980s, Fokker Space in the Netherlands issued a few superb scale models. I have a nice IRAS model, the first-ever space-based observatory to perform a survey of the entire sky at infrared wavelengths.

All times are CT (US)
