NASA Johnson Space Center solicitation
International Space Station Models

This notice is issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC) to post a Request For Information (RFI) via the internet, and solicit responses from interested parties. This document is for information and planning purposes and to allow industry the opportunity to verify reasonableness and feasibility of the requirement, as well as promote competition. This RFI synopsis is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government, nor will the Government pay for the information submitted in response. Respondents will not be notified of the results.

NASA/JSC is conducting market research to seek potential sources who can provide International Space Station (ISS) scale models (1/100th and 1/44 scales) with cases. Each ISS model is to be manufactured to the specifications below and must include a Custom Designed Transit Case. A diagram can be seen here.

The models shall be delivered to NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). Cases and models are to come with a 5-year warranty on all components, materials and craftsmanship; which does not include damage due to extensive abuse and normal wear-and-tear. The case insulation is to come with a 5 year warranty.

What does NASA do with these models? How come the public (taxpayers) does not have access to them?

The public (taxpayer) does have access to these models. You can reach out to the same companies who will respond to this type of solicitation and contract with them to build you a model (e.g. Proach Models).

As for what these models are for — based on the solicitation requirement that they include a custom transit case — they may be for display at conferences and for traveling exhibits, like Destination: Station.

Note that the solicitation is not to purchase models, but to identify sources for such models. It could be that NASA's current provider is no longer available, and JSC is doing the research for future reference.
