Earlier this year, I was thrilled to be commissioned by NASA to re-paint a scale model of the orbiter Discovery for display in the Kennedy Space Center Launch Control Center (LCC) lobby.

The project lasted from April to August, with a delay for a hospital stay.

I dedicate this project to all of my friends who maintained the orbiters, flew on them and prepared them for their next mission and to my family for without your love and support, this project would not have been possible. Thank you.

Congratulations Tim, on the fantastic transformation and faithful depiction of Discovery!

The tile detail on the underbelly, around the windows and nose is really terrific.

Mmmmm, all that work and you didn't add a drag chute to the tail?

I'm just kidding. That is an excellent piece of paintwork my friend. Using two D painting techniques to create a 3D look to the TPS and one correct for the later ISS flights resulted in a very nice effect in my opinion (or did you use some elements to give some of the TPS depth under the paint as well?).

The original paint job was nice as well, but given that Constellation is a dead program, I guess this repaint is more fitting these days as it honors the shuttle program as we knew it.

And I will admit, to me, the shuttles are works of art and some of the most beautiful things to look at in their white (many shades), gray (many shades) and black TPS glory!

WOW!!! What an awesome transformation! I like this look better than the original finish, much more appropriate.

Congratulations. You have transformed something that looked like a kid's ride in a shopping mall to a magnificent replica. The texturing is especially amazing.

Thanks everyone for the kind words about the work.

It really was a labor of love. I began working in a neighbor's garage (they were out of town) and after my heart attack, finished up by emptying our dining room.

Yes, Jorge I had Lynn's permission.

I'll post photos for those without FB as soon as I can.

So, how did you achieve that textured appearance to the TPS? Did you do a form of wall papering on of tiles before applying the paint shades over the top? It looks very effective, especially around the windows (and the sunk in appearance of the windows as well in their proper places). Given that this model is now on display indoors, the finish should hold up for quite a number of years.
