After about 1-2 months of work, today I finally finished a 1:24 Space Shuttle Orbit model. I built Atlantis, although later I'm going to make interchangeable decals for the other orbiters (and also markings from other time periods, to an extent). For the payloads, I've make a KU Band Antenna, Canadarm, OBSS, LMC, ICC, MPLM, Orbiter Docking System, Spacehab Double Module (and associated tunnels), Spacelab pallet, Quest airlock, LDEF, and DFI. In the future, I plan to do more. The model also features a full flight deck and a working cabin light. I'm considering loaning the complete model (as well as some of my collection) to either a local science center or another public place as I'll be out of town for a number of months anyways. Here's some images. For larger images (including lots of pictures and information on the build process) see here. Spacehab double module, ODS, and LCC, similar to STS-96, 101, and 106. LDEF and DFI. Though they never flew together, I thought it was fitting to put them together. Quest, Spacelab pallets, and ODS, as on STS-104. |

Here's my attempts at taking pictures of the cockpit. The camera really doesn't do it justice.

Hokey smokers!! What a terrific build! ...and Hu-u-u-ge!!But, please, please install the drogue chute compartment at the base of the tail. You've got a lot of nice detail, I'd love to see it done up right! I'm gonna link your build to a few other sites... it IS sensational!! Thanks man! |

I wanted to have a drogue chute compartment too, I was sad when I realized the kit I was using didn't have it. I might try kludging one on. This kit had a lot of flaws, I had to repaint a great deal of it -- especially the HRSI tiles. I also added on the star trackers, flight deck, and engines, which were all from a different kit. Then all the payloads (some of which needed repainting) came from yet another set of kits.As for the ET and SRB's, I'm considering doing an SRB although I don't think an ET would be strong enough (plus there would be no way to assemble the whole stack together). Because of weight issues, the doors had to be strengthened in a way that doesn't allow them to close, plus the star trackers are permanently exposed, so I'm just going to leave this model showcasing the shuttle in flight. |

Beautiful!! Can you tell us what kit the main orbiter is from, and/or any construction details? I'm especially interested in how a paper model like this is constructed. Thank you. |

I'm always amazed how well some people can use and exacto knife and scissors! I tried making a V-2 model from paper once. After a long time I had a nose cone and a nozzle. Never got farther than that. Absolutely beautiful work on that! |

I honestly don't understand people who make paper models, cutting only with exacto knives. It's extremely tedious, yet it seems very popular. I tried to avoid exacto knives as much as possible while making this, and it was a very big time saver. Even for scoring, I just folded the paper along the edge of a large knife. |

I had some requests for some more images. As there's quite a few, I'll just post links. They can be found here and here. |

Great work. I like the interior that is inside the shuttle. Great. Do you have some PDF- sheets to print out... to reproduce this model in this scale? |

If you're interested, I can email pdf's of the repainted shuttle itself. Just be warned that it takes quite a few pages, also many parts are cut up to fit into 8.5x11 paper (I did most splits by drawing lines across the part, printing out each side, then only cutting the line on one side and overlapping it on the space leftover on the other). However the STS-104 payload, I had to pay for and therefor can't share. If you're interested in making it in 1/24, just send me an email with everything you'd like and I can send it. I could also scale it down to 1/48 (the original size of the cockpit/engines) which is much much much more manageable. Also, the maker of the 1/48 cockpit/engines is also working on a full shuttle in 1/48. I expect it to be many, many times more detailed than the shuttle I derived my model from. In fact, it will probably be the most accurate shuttle paper model released. I'm not sure when it will be finished, he only has the flight deck/engines/forward fuselage (unpainted)/engine compartment (unpainted) finished. His work can be found here. |
