I wanted a 1/48 scale Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) to display next to my Code 3 Collectibles' Lunar Module but found nothing commercially available that came close with the level of detail I wanted, especially after having seen the custom built Apollo 15 1/32 CSM on this forum.I knew RealSpace produced a 1/48 CSM resin kit and I contacted Steve (aka History in Miniature) and asked if I could commission him to build it. Here's the result... simply stunning. I'm so pleased with it and I say again to anyone who wants a super high quality display model - go speak to the model builders on this forum.

Great work Steve, can you e-mail me with a quote for the model, I'd like to use it to top off the SV that I'm building. |

Jon, If you're planning to use it with the Revell SLA, it won't work. Not easily, anyway. The RealSpace SM diameter is somewhat smaller than the Revell diameter. Dave |

Jon, Dave is correct. The diameters of the S.M. and S.L.A are different. |

I know, that's why I molded the assembled SLA with RTV, cast a solid piece of urethane, molded the new casting and cast the final part hollow by using the solid casting turned down slightly to get a thin consistent wall thickness. Eack step of molding and casting had enough shrink to reduce the part to the correct size. This was done around '95 IIRC and I think the Revell SLA scales out to 1/44 so the total shrink needed was about 8%. When that Apollo 11 IMI model came out it was also too big but it fit the Revell kit perfectly so I used one of my Revell kits to do the SLA with one of the panels removed. I reinforced the thin styrene parts and modified the brass painted Apollo white and covered the windows to look like the boost cover. Although the Revell SLA is also Block I, I liked the look of all the fine detailing so I left it on The AMM SV parts are taking longer so we're going to offer the Aft Interstage, SLA and F-1's fairings and fins built from the original molds. The Aft Interstage is the Nicest part. The F-1's look like the Marshall F-1's. |
