Inspired by an e-mail (thanks Francis!), I got to thinking this evening about classic pinball machines with real space exploration themes. It seems that Williams Electronics was inspired by quite a few NASA missions: There was also apparently a Llobregat machine by the title Apollo 9, a 1980 Zaccaria Space Shuttle and a Sega Apollo 13 machine released in 1995 in connection with the movie.Anyone know of any others? I have visions of a fantasy arcade with all of these machines lined up and my pocket full of quarters... |

Robert:Good post. While not space themed as such, Gottlieb's "Spirit of 76" uses some large astronaut and spaceship graphics on the back glass and playfield. (I'm fortunate enough to have one in my basement.) Brian |

There is the 1972 Apollo 14 Arcade game with "real outer space docking action" from the Chicago Coin Company. As the flyer points out: "Player actually controls docking from inside the spaceship in full dimension and authentic maneuvers." I have an advertising flyer from this game. While not a pinball machine, it would be right at home in any arcade. You can see a copy of one here. There was also the Apollo Moon Shot Rifle Gallery game, also by Chicago coin. |

Oh man. That Apollo 13 game looks like a lot of fun. Miniature moving Saturn V? 13-ball multiball? Sign me up. |

I missed one from Williams' catalog (thanks Robert!): A new thought: collecting just the back glasses to each of these machines would make for a striking 'stained glass' window treatment for your collection 'cathedral'... |

I have the following pinball machines: - Apollo
- Skylab
- Space Odyssey
- Space Shuttle
- Space Station
- Apollo 13
Four of them are in my living room and the other two get rotated in occasionally. The Space Shuttle is probably the best all around to play. Apollo 13 is fun but a little hard to follow everything thing that is going on for the casual player.I have restored them all the best I can without any paint work. They are play well and the artwork is great! I used to keep an eye out for a Friendship 7 but finally realized I just didn't have the room. I'll see if I can get a photo and add it to my post. I know it isn't pinball, but with the subject of other space program themed games out there, I was wondering if anybody still has an original Atari Lunar Lander video game cabinate in their collection (one that didn't get converted to Asteroids when that game came out)? |

I have a Gottlieb 2001 pinball machine from about 1971 or so... doesn't work right now but I should get it fixed.I enjoyed playing 2001 while in college and bought this one about five years ago. Garry |

Ah, my favorite was Flight 2000. You had to "build" the rocket stage by stage - three stages total - and then the 4th ball would liftoff the rocket, which equated to a 4-ball multiball. Very difficult to get the liftoff as you had to lock all three balls one at a time and then hit sequential targets from 10 to 0, then get the 4th ball up the ramp.Richard |
