I was at the National Air and Space Museum today, killing time before my flight back to Houston (and watching "Magnificent Desolation" again), so I decided to check out the gift shop (what self-respecting collector wouldn't?).Anyway, on the top floor (its a three floor emporium), against one wall they have what I assume to be new "nose art" wall hangings of the X-15 and X-1. These appear to be slight-to-severe compressed versions of their "nose" panels, with the decals and markings as they appear on the real vehicle hanging just outside the shop in the Milestones of Flight Gallery. No indication as to who made these or how limited these "limited editions" are, but they list at $200 each. I didn't have my camera with me (yes, I know, I am a shame to all journalists everywhere) but in my humble opinion they were nice for what they were, but too much $$ for my taste. Now, had they had the nose of an orbiter, well, I might have had to taken out my check book. I do not have any other information, but if you are planning a visit to the NASM, you might want to check them out. If not, I'm sure calling their gift shop would result in more details, as available and requested. |

Hello All...The nose art replicas that Robert alludes to are quite nice.I have the X-15 nose art panel which is about 3 1/2 feet long and I have had it signed by Scott Crossfield and Gen. Robert M. White in person. I was able to buy mine from Garcia Aviation in California. They had the Enola Gay, X-15, X-1 and some others. As I recall , they were about 125.00 plus shipping but that was about 2 years ago. Best To All....Donald |

Hello everybody. I was the first one to have the X-15 & X-1 body panel made back in 1997 by the company VELASCO ENTERPRISES. It was their first time atttempting this because they specialized in WWII Nose Art. The company was out of Norwalk, CT. I paid $120.00 a piece for them. They are real nice and they are made out of aircraft aluminum. I don't know if the company exist anymore. I found them advertizing in Aviation History magazine and that is how I got their information. But that is all the information I have. I wish I could be of more help. AIM HIGH! Mike |

Hello again. I did a google search on VELASCO ENTERPRISES and they are still around and making body panels. They want $180 for them on their web site. The post WWII body panels they make are X-1, F-86, X-15, and SR-71. I hope this is of some help. I think you can ask them to custom make you anything as long as they have a picture to go by.
