Today I saw an eBay listing for a new toy - a 12" astronaut with a Friendship 7 Mercury capsule. I don't think this is the GI Joe toy from a few years ago. Does anyone know anything about this? And, if so where can it be purchased? Thanks, Jim Sigler |

The item you saw is most likely the G. I. Joe "Mission: Splashdown" (special missions series) by Kenner. I know they were sold at Toys R' Us within the past year or so. The UPC is as follows 0-76281-57070-9. I do not know if they are still available or not? I think they were about 49.95 but I am not certain. Kenner is a division of Hasbro Inc. I hope this is of come help. It is a large box with a large Mercury style capsule with a full size spacesuited GI Joe inside the capsule. Good Luck! By the way, it is a reissue of the original of many years ago! ...Donald |

Just curious to see if everyone here knew about the exclusive FAO Schwarz Friendship 7 capsule and astronaut. It uses the old GI Joe Space Capsule mold but made to look more like the original Mercury space craft, i.e, instead of the clear plastic sliding hatch, it is now tiled like the rest of the craft and the whole thing is painted black. It also comes with an astronaut, fully suited like a Mercury astronaut would have been, air conditioner and all. Go to faoscwharz.com. In the upper right corner is a box that says "Only at FAO" or something like that. It's number 9. FYI, Gene |

Somebody is already selling one on eBay. I thought it was a fake toy painted to resemble Mercury capsule. That is what appears the manufacutres have done. I'm going to check FAO's site. |

Yeah, you can find 'em on eBay but as long as FAO still has them, why pay the money? Gene |

A long time ago I had the original GI Joe Mercury Capsule. At the time I never thought it was that accurate and wanted to customize it to look as close to the original as possible (Color, periscope port, window, hatch, the works). Unfortunately the capsule got separated from the astronaut figure over the years. It was not until recently that I was able to buy a capsule in such bad shape that I don't mind messing with the integrity of an original GI Joe capsule. I've been able to get good photos of the control panel as the sticker version has long since been played off. What I'm trying to find out relates to the retro pack/heat shield. I have gotten good photos of the retro pack with the straps, but only in Black and white photos. I always thought that the heatshield was white in color, but there is some indications that it might be another color, such as metallic red. Does anyone have color photos that show the Mercury capsule being raised into the booster showing the underside of the craft. I'd be interested if anyone can help me. I studied photos of the Friendship 7 later edition of GI Joe capsule and that doesn't really help. Thanks, Cliff |

Forgive for doing the math for me, I have obtained two old beat up Mercury capsules that I am modifying (just a little) for part of the Mercury exhibit, does any one know the scale off the top of there head? I saw that you can buy a set of decals for the Atomic City 1/12 for about 11.00. I may try to build an escape tower for one of them or might even do a whole Redstone if I can find a pipe the right diameter.------------------ Mercury7 Science Center www.mercury7.com |

It's about a third larger than the size of the Atomic City... so I would approximate that it's close to 1/8th scale. I would scan the Atomic City decals and re-size them up to what you need..then print them on decal paper and use them for the Joe capsule. |

Mercury7, The plans for a Mercury Redstone are on my website. You will need to scale them down to match the capsule but that is pretty easy to do when you print them out. Scale at 0.666 should take you from 1/8 to the 1/12 for the Atomic City capsule. The GI Joe one is 1/6 so you'll have to go up 1.33. Let me know if you have any questions... I have thought about flying one of those Joe's for years but haven't got to it. The Gumby video is excellent! Scott spacecraftreplicas.com |

Cliff, I believe the heatshield was a redish brownish color. It was the epoxy resin that made it this way. It was nearly the same color as the clamp ring around the bottom of the capsule. There are many photos out there in electron land. There is also some really good shots on the Spacecraft films set. If you don't have it, you should... Scott |

Thanks guys for your help....This will be a fun project, also one of the members here sold me a SunStar Mars rover and I just got lucky on an ebay auction too... got the giant Lego Mars rover and the giant Lego shuttle for 92.00... already built! I mainly just wanted the rover because big models of it are unavailable. Might be neat to set up a webcam on it and motorize the wheel and let the kids drive it via computer. |
