July 1975, during ASTP, a total of 11 Omega Speedmaster chronographs were flown, the three astronauts each wore two 321 versions, the two cosmonauts each wore two 861 versions, with Leonov carrying a third Omega in his personal kit. A record-number of 11 Omega Speedmaster at the same time in space, a record that stood until December 1990.As far as I know, the story of Alexei Leonov carrying a third Omega wristwatch on ASTP didn't give detail which extra wristwatch Leonov carried, a Speedmaster or a Flightmaster. Esoteric research we all love at moonwatchuniverse. I wonder if that (elusive) 11th wristwatch was mentioned in full detail on the preference kit contents? |

Leonov sold his ASTP flown Omega Flightmaster in 1996 via Sotheby's. |

The ASTP flown Speedmasters is one of my favorite topics. This Alexei Leonov signed Speedmaster case back is one of my favorites and was one of the most difficult pieces to obtain for my collection. |

Interesting replies. Any reference for the 1996 Sotheby's auction (Lot no 189 and price achieved)? |

The lot description: Lot 189 Soyuz-Apollo/Apollo-Soyuz, 15-19 July 1975 A watch worn by Cosmonaut Commander Leonov on this mission. An Omega stainless steel Flightmaster chronograph wristwatch with subsidiary dials for constant seconds, 30 minutes and 12-hour registers, stainless steel strap, the back engraved "Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov" in English, accompanied by a signed description written by Leonov. A friendship begun on Apollo/Soyuz continues: Leonov writes that in 1978 he broke the crystal on his watch. Astronaut Tom Stafford, American Commander of Apollo/Soyuz offered to have the watch repaired by Omega. Leonov gladly accepted and gave the watch to Stafford who not only had it mended but also had the inscription added. Leonov continued to wear the watch over his 14 years as Commander of the Soviet Cosmonaut Corps. $1000-2000 |
