Record-setting Rolex-in-space mission...US Navy Lt flight surgeon/NASA astronaut Jonathan "Jonny" Kim, ISS Expedition 73 crew member, took three personal Rolex wrist watches with him onboard the International Space Station: - Rolex Daytona
- Rolex Submariner, and a
- Rolex GMT-master
Currently 93 days in space, flight surgeon/astronaut Dr Kim also took an Omega Seamaster with him.In 2017, Dr Kim was selected as a NASA astronaut in group 22. |

Just to keep the conversation going, in my opinion, the first Rolex in space was the Rolex GMT-master 1675 pepsi bezel pilot watch worn by X-15 test pilot William "Pete" Knight during flight 190 on October 17, 1967. Knight piloted the X-15 above 50 miles (85 Km) earning him USAF astronaut wings for flying in space.Another extremely interesting Rolex story, is the Rolex GMT-master 1675 worn by Jack Swigert during Apollo 13. After the mission, the Apollo 13 crew visited Switzerland and Swigert gifted his space-flown Rolex GMT-master to Rolex manager René Jeanneret, who gave Swigert a gold version. Hence Swigert wore a gold Rolex GMT-master in his official NASA WSS (white space suit) portrait, taken in December 1971. Now go and read Walter Schirra's 1988 book "Schirra's Space" on page 164 for another interesting Rolex astronaut story! |
