From NASA video producer Guy Noffsinger on Facebook: On this September 8th seven years ago (the photo was released to me but it actually happened in May) I got to make a crazy idea become real with the help of William Shatner and my friend and colleague Bob Jacobs! Proof that NASA is the best fed agency in America! Meet exhibit A: I asked Star Trek film Director J.J. Abrams if I could borrow a phaser movie prop from reboot #1, fly it in space and then return it for reboot #2 making it the only item in history to go from movie — to space — and then back into another movie. Tadah!!!! Thanks astronaut Gregory Chamitoff for helping it get there and not shooting any Klingons with it.

That's awesome! Glad JJ Abrams gave the prop, really cool idea. |

Was it a hero version (working electronics) or a background version? |

Noffsinger's post didn't say, but given the requirements aboard the space station, if it was the hero version, it was almost certainly flown without any batteries. |

Well that is stunning.Thank you for the explanation of what "hero" means in prop speak. I've heard the term before, but not what it means. |

No pun intended on stunning? My guess is that the "hero" came from the lead actor, the hero, having a prop that was going to be shown on screen a lot, thus necessitating more details and if it had them, working lights and stuff like that. The background actors would not be seen as much, so their props would just have to be approximations - decals in place of a touchpad, for example. |
