collectSPACE Apollo moon rock rediscovered in Cambodia debuts on displayA small moon rock gifted to Cambodia by the United States amid the Vietnam War has resurfaced after being all but lost to time and strife. Officials representing the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh and the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia unveiled the museum's display of the "goodwill" moon rock on Monday (June 18), following an extensive effort to determine its origin. |

Nice to see the interest and finding some of these lunar rocks that had been lost, being found. Kudos! |

I bet that rock has a whole different kind of story to tell, given the history of Cambodia in the 1970s. |

The U.S. Embassy and National Museum did look for the flag and original plaque but were unable to find them. Given that it was the Khmer Republic flag that was carried to the moon, and the Khmer Republic was overthrown by the Khmer Rouge (Democratic Kampuchea) just two years after the presentation, it is not too hard to imagine an unfortunate fate for the flag. But that is just speculation... |
