I am looking for information on a Rendezvous Rangefinder Assembly that I believe was used on early space shuttle flights to assist in docking with MIR or docking with satellites for repairs. I can find mention of laser range finders, but this is completely analog and optical in nature. It is similar to the rangefinder on a camera in that two images converge and when they do the dial gives you a distance. It is a tube about 23" long with a dial on one end with a distance measurement scale. there is a viewfinder to look through with a second optical port at the end with the dial, and a optical port at the other end. |

I remember a smaller handheld device used onboard shuttle missions, to measure the distance to the Mir space station on board STS-63 and STS-71, up to STS-91? Can't be the same ? |

Philip, thanks for your response. Is the one you are referring to similar in design, just shorter, or of a different design? | |
