I was fortunate enough recently to purchase something I've not seen before, experimental food packets from what I believe to be Apollo. I would be interested to see if anyone else has such experimental examples or comments regarding these.

Food Packet One:
CHICKEN AND VEGETABLES
3OZ / 20 MINS / HOT
R134039-1

This packet is notably smaller than those used during Apollo (19.6cm x 18cm). The packet also has an external germicide tablet. The top part of this packet has what appears to be a folded up funnel, possibly to spoon out the contents, though it does also have the line marking at the bottom to indicate where it should be cut using scissors. A second reference number is embedded into the plastic packet itself which reads ''F101248''.

Given that the packet has an external germicide tablet (this was changed to internal for Apollo 8) and also mentions water temperature (a feature not introduced until Apollo), I would assume this food packet was an experiment made around the time of Apollo 7.

Food Packet Two:
CHICKEN SANDWICHES
R134042-1

This food packet is considerably different from those used during Apollo. Firstly, the packet contains 6 pre-made Chicken Sandwich bites separated into two sections of three. The sandwich bites have an upper and power bread section with the middle being chicken. The reverse also has four blue velcro squares, indicating that the packet was meant for a LMP.

There is a green sticker beneath the EXPERIMENTAL sticker, but I cannot make out what it says without removing the EXPERIMENTAL sticker itself.

While this food packet contains no obvious signs of being Gemini, Apollo or otherwise, the reference number on this is not far off that of the CHICKEN & VEGETABLES so one can assume this was made around the same time.

I managed to take a look at the green label without removing the experimental sticker using a photography light. It reads ''13 BN''.

All times are CT (US)
