I have a helmet liner dated April 1965 on its label. Could this be a Gemini helmet liner due to the date on the label? The label has several infos on it. Does anyone know anything about the history of this type of helmet inliner due to all the info on the label? Thank you very much for any info about this artifact.

It is similar to the Gemini helmet liner but is for an Apollo A1C helmet. The A1C suits, which were similar in design to Gemini suits, but with several modifications, were never flown due to the tragic Apollo 1 fire. The designation AHL-1C-2 means Apollo Helmet Liner, suit model 1C (C is for the David Clark Co.) and is serial number 2 (for use on suit serial number 102). (A1C suit serial numbers started with serial number 101). It is an early serial number (#2) with a "standard" head size (6), and was used on a size Large Long suit. Since it was a standard head size, it was not specifically made for an astronaut. The helmet liners made for astronauts were custom made and had the astronauts name in the label. I am guessing it was used for engineering tests, and looks to be well used based on the staining of the leather. So in summary very similar to a Gemini helmet liner but not actually a Gemini liner. It is a nice looking liner. |
