I would like to know if anyone can help me in order to have a better picture of the Apollo-era Snoopy caps.

Some pics they look dark brown and I have understood they are dark brown but when I look at pictures of Neil Armstrong, it seems to be black. Is his cap brown and is an optical effect?

Also, the white cloth is a cloth piece or a netting cloth? Or are caps with netting and others with white cloth pieces?

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me in this subject. Last thing, please forget my poor English as I am from Spain and I am still learning.

You have made an excellent observation that I have noticed as well.

I thought that they were all black and white, until I saw the Apollo 11 display of Armstrong and Aldrin for Madame Tussouds Wax museum in London. There the hats were almost a light brown in color. These were the only Snoopy hats that I have seen in person. So I am equally curious as to the expert answer we get on this!

Also, other than the hats I saw in 1994 in London, I have never seen any other hats on display. I cannot state that none are on display anywhere, but, if they are, I don't know where. Has any been placed in museum collections, or did the astronauts get to keep them?

And, are any in private collections? Does anyone know if Charles Schulz got one? He should have if not.

Does anybody have last year's Superior catalogue? My memory may be playing tricks but I could've sworn there was a Snoopy cap in the auction.

The Madame Tussaud's museum caps are made by Guard Lee. They made it following the patterns of the Apollo-Soyuz program, which by then, they really look dark brown.

I would love to have a chance to buy one from auction is there is something for sell.

The ones made for the Apollo 13 movie (and Madame Tussaud I presume) aren't real as these don't have the headphones inside?

Philip, no, the ones used in Apollo 13 are not real. They are made by Spaceworks Inc. The are dark brown with white netting. No headphones. The Tussaud museum have white cloth instead of netting.

I work for NASA JSC for my day job as an EVA astronaut instructor and flight controller.

To answer your questions, the Apollo Snoopy Comm Cap is brown and white. The black/white color that you saw in some photos is a lighting effect. Also, the white portion is actually a spandex mesh (not solid cloth).

For those who do not know, the Snoopy caps that NASA uses today for the Shuttle EMU suit are essentially the same design as the Apollo caps (just some minor mods to the mike booms and electronics).

Hope this helps!
