Cosmonaut cuisine in tubes: Real Russian space food on sale in Moscow

Move over astronaut ice cream, Russian space food tubes have arrived.

As of Friday (Feb. 6), the All-Russian Exhibition Center in Moscow now sells authentic cosmonaut food to the public, the state-run Sputnik news service reported. The center, a sprawling trade show also known by the Russian acronym VDNKh, is marketing the cosmic cuisine in toothpaste-like tubes.

"Visitors [to VDNKh] will have a chance to try a full-course cosmonaut menu, including four kinds of soups, various meat dishes and a variety of desserts," the Sputnik report said. "According to organizers, there will be 11 variations of tubes, each tasting like a different kind of food."

Wonder if the Russian food tasted by both cosmonauts and US/foreign astronauts on the ISS needs an extra dose of tabasco sauce to spice up the bland taste experienced by most space diners?

Just a note for curiousity value. Many years ago — about forty to be precise — I had several tubes of Soviet space food for my pupils to examine that were obtained from a Russian vessel visiting Tilbury Docks.

If anyone happens to be making a run over to Moscow for some of these, I'll try to make it worth your while to pick up a tube or two of these suckers.

I wonder, given that these tubes contain meat and dairy products, if they can clear customs into the U.S.?

Speaking of space and toothpaste-like tubes, ISS Expedition 40 flight engineer Oleg Artemyev shared these photos of Russian space toothpaste today.
