Tested, the "home on the web" for Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage (of MythBusters fame), profiles in this article space artifact and memorabilia collecting, collectSPACE and, well, me...
People tend to miss it, when they first walk into Robert Pearlman's office; their eyes are immediately drawn to the glass display cases full of astronaut flight suits, or the decades-old dehydrated food packets, or the bits of parachutes used to lower space capsules into the ocean half a century ago. He might tell them about the ballpoint pen he has that was used by astronauts on Skylab for two months in 1973, or a pressure glove worn into space by Russian cosmonaut Ulf Merbold in a 1994 Soyuz mission.

But at some point, visitors will turn around and see it resting against a wall: a four-foot-by-four-foot, 200 pound hatch built for the International Space Station...

One of the better articles about our hobby that I have read in a while.

Good read! Congrats, Robert. I learned some things I didn't know before (ex. Coke in Space 1985 was related to the fact that aging changes Coke's flavor?).

Hmm, nein, didn't know that ESA astronaut, Dr. Merbold... was a "Russian cosmonaut."

Nice collection and pretty good write-up.

Great article, super positive serious reporting. I did not see the word “geek” even once, this lets folks know they were impressed with a serious mature subject. Great PR Robert!

A great story that does a good job of putting into words our passion for space collecting. (I especially like it because I share Robert's fascination with space hardware.)

I was really glad that Wes Fenlon, the writer, chose to focus this article on the history of the hobby and the pieces that we collect, rather than the market for them, and perhaps more importantly, how those new to the hobby could become involved.

Although he profiled my collection and collectSPACE, I particularly liked that the article links to our directory of other collector websites, directly links to Scott's great collection, includes a link to Chris' Space Flown Artifacts guide and points to many of the auction houses and conventions that support our community.

As I've shared with some of you privately, my collection is about to undergo some significant changes, both in scope and (hopefully) in size, as well as perhaps in the process introduce a new endeavor for collectSPACE. I'm embracing Ken's advice one more time, as explained in the article, so I was happy to be able to share the collection's current state through Tested.

I really enjoyed the article as well. I especially enjoyed reading your story about connecting with Ken. The story of my immersion into collecting closely parallels yours. I read that same edition of Final Frontier at my chiropractor's office and immediately knew that I needed to get in touch with Ken Havekotte. Unfortunately there was no contact info in the magazine. I contacted the publisher who wouldn't help, then I contacted the author of the story, Beth Dickey, but she couldn't help either. Finally, months later, I was visiting a space collector friend and he had a phone number for Ken. I called him and that began our long friendship and occasional business relationship. But he never sent me a box full of goodies!

The article, leveraging Rob's collection further reinforces the point that collecting space has progressed out of the "fringe" and is now mainstream. Would have been great if RR had been included in the paragraph discussing auction houses since that company's seasonal venues constitute the premier activity to secure space collectables.

As I recall, I sent my handwritten letter to Ken care of the magazine. I had hoped, but didn't count on my note reaching him, so when his box arrived, I was doubly thrilled and surprised!

First off, to Robert: Great writeup on your fabulous aerospace collection and I like the fact, as you pointed out, the reporter focused more on the history of space collecting rather than what the market prices are.

Yes, I well remember your letter to me, Robert, and I am trying to locate the actual letter itself so that it would be a prominent place in my own "letter collection" of space age personalities, as yourself.

I am so proud that my reply back to you would help inspire a future "pioneer of sorts," as you have become, in advancing our space collecting hobby to new heights never before dreamed of!

Even after so many years — with millions of readers and visitors — your vision, passion, and creation of the world's biggest and best space collecting website and related aerospace news continues on today!

I must say, though, didn't our friend Cindy S. play a role in getting us together? I recall her phoning me once or twice in asking if a letter had arrived from you.

For my good friend and "graphic design associate," Joel, Actually, I really don't know why aerospace journalist Beth Dickey, a good friend of mine, didn't relay your request to me.

Beth, one of the best space reporters that I knew throughout the 1980/90s, was another "pioneer of sorts." She had the foresight and vision in putting space collecting on the map so-to-speak as a new and serious growing hobby-to-be-industry.

Her premier article in Final Frontier magazine, in my opinion, was a benchmark for the hobby. No question about it, in my mind, it did in fact revolutionize the space memorabilia arena like never before!

After her feature article had appeared in 1991, I was getting phone calls, letters, and faxes for weeks and months at a time, and in some cases, for years afterwards!

The pioneering space article also enabled me to get in touch with some of our nation's space fliers and other space age legends. Imagine my surprise when a phone call would come from an Apollo moonwalker and other known space celebrities asking my advice and opinions about their aerospace career accumulations and collections.

Joel, unfortunately, if you were as young as Robert was when he contacted me (I believe Rob was a junior high school student), by all means, a box of space goodies would have landed at your doorstep, too!

But, in all kidding aside, I'll be happy to send you one! No, but really...

In closing, though, let me thank Robert and Joel both for their friendship and support for so many fun and exciting "space" years together on this fascinating journey.

As I told Wes when he was interviewing me for the article, your involvement in collectSPACE to this day has been a constant source for inspiration. I know I have told you before, but I am very grateful for all you have done for me personally and for the space memorabilia community at large.

I first met Cindy over the online dial-up service Prodigy, which I think was after I had written you. But I do remember her putting us in touch, as well as introducing me to the late Howard Benedict.
