Zippo Manufacturing Company has introduced a "Moon Landing 40th Anniversary" model as part of its 2009 line of lighters.

Some moments are indelibly etched in a generation's memory. Like the now-classic promise of "one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind" spoken by Neil Armstrong as he first stepped onto the surface of the moon July 20, 1969.

Zippo renews that historic memory with the Moon Landing 40th Anniversary commemorative lighter. The granular Galaxy finish, exclusive for this lighter in 2009, sparkles when it catches the light like stardust caught in a moonbeam. The art is laser engraved to the media finish base lighter, resulting in a metallic silver image.

The 40th anniversary model continues the company's history of offering lighters to commemorate U.S. space exploration achievements, dating back to the recovery of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts.

The original Apollo 11 lighter, released in 1969, was one of the last to use a popular Zippo imprinting process called Town and Country.

Zippo has produced a bunch of other space-related lighters throughout the 1960s/70s. But not all were exclusive Zippo-commemorative space achievements. There were many other aerospace companies and contractors that Zippo lighters were produced for; many of which highlighted that company's role in our nation's space efforts.

I'm interested in knowing if anyone picks one up and how they look in person.

Here are two photos I shared on Instagram this morning. I purchased and received the lighter earlier this week.

I think I personally prefer the original 1969 design (as pictured above), as it feels (and is) more what I think of when I think Zippo, but this 50th anniversary edition is attractive, especially when it catches the light and iridescent details shine.

NASA's Perseverance launch sparks new Zippo 'Mars 2020' lighter

The liftoff of NASA's Perseverance rover sparked the launch of a new collectible in celebration of the Mars 2020 mission.

Zippo, the iconic U.S. brand of reusable metal lighters, revealed its latest limited edition lighter in time with the start of NASA's first mission to search for and cache signs of microbial life on the Red Planet.

"Celebrating today's steps toward the future of Martian exploration," Zippo posted to its website on Thursday (July 30) as a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Collecting space themed Zippos is a wonderful hobby. The selection listed on eBay seems unlimited and for the most part they’re very affordable. Also they’re easy to date as each one is stamped with the month and year of manufacture.

But have you considered the technical significance? It wasn’t until the early 20th century that humans developed a simple, durable, inexpensive, reusable fire making tool that could be operated with one hand and carried in a pocket. This was a huge development.

Before the invention of the Zippo making fire wasn’t easy or cheap. And the ability to make fire was a matter of life or death. But less than 50 years after the Zippo was invented men were walking on the moon.

One last comment on this. I’m very carful to explain to my students that I disapprove of smoking. The Zippo is used for camping and as a survival tool only, not for tobacco.

All times are CT (US)
