I received the following message (great story) on my site, and it's the first I've heard of these. No luck with initial searches, other than a Virginia company called Annin who claims they made the A11 flight article. A NASA paper notes the flags were usually taken from the government services catalog, suggesting a number of suppliers. Would appreciate any insights. quote: In the summer of 1972 (I believe) I was in my boat, in the middle of Lake Tiogue in Coventry, RI when a Goodyear blimp passed over very low.I followed the blimp as it crossed over the lake. When it began to land in a parking lot, I anchored my boat and swam to shore. When I go to the blimp, a man handed me a plastic bag that contained a "flag" which was about 6" x 9" and had the Apollo 15 mission graphic on it. The description card that came with it stated that the Apollo moon mission flags were made and screen printed in Coventry, RI. This small flag was an exact replica, made of the same fireproof, acid proof material.... I kept this flag and description card all these years and recently stumbled across it while packing to move. I was wondering if you have ever heard of this. Any idea what it might be worth?

Two key phrases pop out: - screen printed in Coventry, RI
- fireproof, acid proof material
Screen Print Corp., of Coventry, Rhode Island, was subcontracted by Owens-Corning Fiberglass to print the Beta cloth patches and flags. My first thought therefore, was this was an unflown beta cloth American flag but then I re-read the story: quote: ...a man handed me a plastic bag that contained a "flag" which was about 6" x 9" and had the Apollo 15 mission graphic on it.
This doesn't sound like a flag at all but rather an uncut, unflown Apollo 15 Beta cloth patch.Has the owner a photo or scan he can share? |

Thanks, Robert - I think you're exactly correct. I really keyed on the word "flag," rather than what he described. I'll send him a link and confirm.--JW |

Uncovered buried treasure no matter how small or large. Great story of how it was obtained, too cool. I wonder if the man that gave it to him was an astronaut? I like following these types of threads the most. collectSPACE at the top of it's game! Terry |
