50 Years Moon Landing: Heraeus Gold for the Golden JubileeMoon to Earth - Quartz glass from Heraeus has sparked precise measurement data through space for 50 years
On July 20, 2019, the moon landing will mark its 50th anniversary. That is a reason to celebrate - also for Heraeus. The laser reflector made of high-tech quartz glass from the Hanau-based technology group is still used to precisely determine the distance between the earth and the moon. 50 years moon landing - a golden anniversary: Heraeus celebrates the connection to this event with two very special gold bars.

When, on July 20, 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first person to enter the moon, this was not only a big step for humanity, but also a milestone for science. On board, the legendary Apollo 11 mission had a science package and a quartz glass laser reflector, which Armstrong's colleague Buzz Aldrin set up on Earth's satellite. Today, the reflector still serves to precisely determine the distance between earth and moon: on average around 384,000 kilometers. It consists of an arrangement of 100 triple prisms made of high-purity high-tech quartz glass from Heraeus.
Why quartz glass and why Heraeus
Quartz glass has been widely used for 120 years. The former Heraeus chief developer Richard Küch (1860-1915) succeeded in 1899 in melting rock crystal at a temperature of around 2,000 degrees C — the result: high-purity bubble-free quartz glass and the beginning of an unprecedented career for this material and its manufacturer.
Today, high-purity quartz glass in the form of glass fibers has become the backbone of modern communication and has become indispensable in medicine and many other industries. (Fast) Internet would not be possible without this material.
Heraeus Quarzglas is a global technology leader and one of the few specialists capable of producing this high-tech material. High-purity quartz glass made by Heraeus is indispensable for the semiconductor, telecommunications, optical, chemical and lamp industries.
Two special Heraeus gold bars for the anniversary

Heraeus celebrates its part in the historic event of the first manned moon landing with two very special gold bars: a two-gram ingot and a limited-edition gold ounce.
Both bars will receive you with an exceptional certificate and in a very special character: The back of the two-gram gold bar shows the footprint of the first man on the moon. The back of the gold ounce adorns the fine imprint of the lunar module and the lunar surface. This bar is limited to 1969 pieces, as a reference to the year of the first moon landing.
You will receive the one-ounce ingot in an exclusive wooden box that is ideal for storing and presenting this valuable piece.
Delivery is only to the German mainland.
