I have acquired a medallion of the first moon landing and have been unable to find an identical one via internet searching. I wondered if it is rare or unusual? It is marked 'Sterling' on the loop of the medal and the chain is marked 'Forstner Sterling'.

Well from what I can tell the chain and loop/medal holder(the sterling pieces) were added to the original medallion. As for the medal it looks familiar but was unable to find any info on it. I do not know if it is sterling, .999 or what. It could be marked on the edge but you would have to remove the sterling holder piece.

Tim, I'm not sure if this 3 oz silver Apollo 11 medal is the one you are thinking of. The medal has similar style of font and design of the astronauts. Granted, the astronauts are in a different configuration and all the same design despite Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo next to them. With these similarities is it designed or manufactured by the same person?

If it's of any further help, the medallion weight is 1/2 ounce (20 grams) and its size is 1 1/4 inches (30mm) across. The outer edge of the silver frame is serrated like a coin.

I have looked under strong magnification and the outer frame unscrews allowing the coin to be removed. On the rim of the coin is: W.E.H.S.S for Walter E Hayward Company Sterling Silver. Does that help to ascertain its rarity or value?

Well that helps. Do a Google search on "Hayward Apollo 11 commemorative medal." You will find this came in both a bronze and sterling version.

As for value I would guess not a whole lot with the price of silver down. Probably get $20-$40 on eBay.
