I'm sure I'm not the only one who isn't a big fan of the flown metal medals that are colored.

I feel like it makes them look... for lack of a better word, cheap. Like toys instead of collectibles. What are your thoughts?

Well first of all, there really isn't a lot of colorized flown melted metal medallions (maybe around 10). Most of these are cheaper $10 to $20 coins.

But the other as the Apollo 7 and the ISS/NASA challenge coin or the Ares IX medals look very good. I wouldn't trade them for anything. You should also see some of the Russian flown pennants.

Have you seen these first hand or judging from pictures you have seen?

Here is a quick list of colorized medals:
  • KSC 50th - Not bad
  • Final mission
    - Silver - so so
    - Bronze - so so
  • Atlantis - Nice
  • Measurable Success
    - STS-1 - Not bad
    - Ares IA - Nice
  • Frontier Of Flight Apollo VII - Very nice
  • NASA Ares IX embedded - Very nice
  • ISS NASA Challenge Coin - Very nice
I think that's about it.

I must admit that I wish they made them more like military 'challenge coins,' where the enamel is applied in spaces where the coin was stamped, as opposed to this current trend of putting in effect, an enameled crest onto a coin with a flat spot.

I have challenge coins from various military and NASA agencies I've been 'awarded' by them over the years. They all look much better than these colored coins...

I agree about the challenge coins.

To me, and I could be alone on this, it feels like they added color for the sake of adding color, which does make them look cheaper.

That's just my opinion, of course.
