Excerpt from AP article:"Gov. Bob Taft is ready to recommend to U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill that he approve Ohio's design, which features the Wright Flyer and an astronaut superimposed over the state's outline. The quarter includes the phrase, "Birthplace of Aviation." "Once a design is approved, the U.S. Mint will issue about 1.2 billion Ohio quarters beginning in April." Has anyone seen a sketch of this design? A quick search of the US Mint's website turned up nothing... |

Havent heard of this design yet...but any astronaut would represent Neil or John for sure.Ill keep an eye out. I dont think the Aviation picture will do it...North Carolinas quarter already featurs the Wright's plane....personally, I think Ohio's motto overdoes it....just because they were born there?? Take a guess when my birthday is, btw It might explain something! -Ben |

Ahhh.. I answered my own question: I'm excited... Ohio was a surprise -- I thought Florida was good for a space theme, and maybe Texas... but I never considered Ohio. |

The mirror like silver proofs are the best and under $30 (if I remember right) for the set of that year's 5 released quarters plus proofs of the remaining US minted coins for the year.------------------ Happy trails, Wayne Edelman "Take sides! BenThey be worthless to you, but over here in the UK our currency nevery changes. Just the boring Queen's head and a leek (a vegetable) on the reverse. So you see - a coin with an astronaut on, even though it is worthless, is quite nice for someone like me who will never see or let alone own one. Jacqueline |

Maybe that sounded a bit loud...Actually, Im a coin colelctor What I mean is that they take all these quarers and make them into :spoons, paperweights, keychains, leather unknowns...etc...and quite frankly, that is nothing more than a money making 'scheme'. I buy the proof sets..US and Canada (who has the world nicest coinage!)..yearly...I guess the investment is the reason, though I started out just getting what I liked. But now that space collecting has taken a priority, my coin collecting is waning. The US Mint tells everyone NOT to colelct pocket change...like the dollar and 50 states...and to spend them. The reason (although contradicting what they want) is that the more they have to issue, the more money they make. The NY Times ran a big article on that when the proposal for the program was first made in 1997. I might still have that article... Anyway...coin colleting is great..but the ridiculus items they make are worthless as far as Im concerned..thats why I suggested to you the proof sets. BTW...you know that Canada had a space commemorative dollar coin last year?? -Ben |

Having spent part of my youth in Dayton, Ohio I consider Ohio as the birthplace of the Wright brothers (in 1945 I meet Orville Wright) and the birthplace of John Glenn also the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, therefore, I believe Ohio can consider itself as "The Birthplace of Aviation" and display the Wright Flyer (built in Dayton) and an Astronaut in the design of the commemorative quarter. My wife is from North Carolina and she (I agree) considers North Carolina as "First in Flight". Having spent much time in Cocoa Beach, Florida I consider Florida as "First in Space Flight"(USA) or "Launch Site to Outer Space". |

I would really like one of these coins especially after reading Richard Jackson's post. Is anyone over there in USA, where these coins will be available, willing to send me one? It will cost me $700 to fly over to pick one up, so any kind gesture would be very much appreciated.Jacqueline |

Hey Jacqueline If you are interested on having the Ohio coin with the atronaut on the back as shown above (if the design gets accepted), I can request an order through my sister. She works for one the major banks here in Cincinnati, Ohio. She can place an order for the amount of coins she want from the mint and gets them, uncirculated! and shiney. Just remind me next year as April approaches.Ben, coin collector, I have all the state coins printed so far...uncirculated. What is the possible appraised value for them? I also have an uncirculated AND NOT TOUCH BY HUMAN HANDS Susan B Athony dollar coin. Do you have one? |

Yea, Ive got em all too..."untouched by hands" means 'proof' in numismatic terms...they are only untouched if they are encased in plastic (put in by machine). Otherwise, *someone* touched it...The price for uncirculated...at least for now..is 25 cents each ...by 2010, the value may be 75c-1$..much like the 1976 quarter...dont forget, so many of each have been made...ie, none are rare. The S.B Anthony dollar...its worth less than 2$. If it is 1981, and the "s" for San Francisco mint is 'not filled in'..then 75$ Jac, You can get the coind from the US mint by mail...like any other catalog. Just check usmint.gov when the time comes...they have an online store. Any other questions, just ask. -Ben |
