Ben & Jerry's launches new limited flavor Boots on the Moooo'n

May 26, 2020

— What do NASA, Netflix and Ben & Jerry's now have in common?

They all have orders to put boots on the moon.

"Boots on the Moooo'n," Ben & Jerry's latest Limited Batch flavor, is inspired by Netflix's newest original, "Space Force," which is launching on the streaming video service on Friday (May 29). Created by Steve Carell and Greg Daniels ("The Office"), Netflix's "Space Force" (not to be confused with the United States Space Force) follows General Mark R. Naird (Carell) and his team of scientists and "Spacemen," who are tasked with getting American boots on the moon in a hurry.

"When I was a child, our country put a man on the moon," says Carell, as Naird, in a trailer for the Netflix series. "We're going back."

Meanwhile, NASA's Artemis program — which is not connected to the ice cream or the comedy series — is working to land the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024.

"Boots on the Moooo'n," the Ben & Jerry's flavor with a "bovine themed moooo added into the mix," features "a universe of milk chocolate ice cream with fudge cows and almond toffee meteor clusters orbiting a sugar cookie dough core."

"While 'Space Force' works to get boots (back) on the moon, this cosmic concoction will launch your dreams into orbit," reads Ben & Jerry's description of the new flavor on its website.

"With fudgy astronaut cows and toffee meteors, space couldn't be any sweeter. Unless the moon was made out of sugar cookie dough. Which for this limited-time flavor, it actually is!" wrote the company.

To celebrate the release, "Boots on the Moooo'n" became the first Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor to ride into the actual stratosphere, carried by a balloon high above Earth. Photos taken on the flight show the pint set against the blackness of space and the curvature of the planet.

The pint's packaging depicts a cow seated in a stylized illustration of a mission control, looking up at an ice cream moon. The Netflix and "Space Force" logos are repeated on the side of the cup's lid.

"Boots on the Moooo'n" will be available on store shelves for a suggested retail price of $4.99, as well as in participating Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops across the country.

"Space Force" on Netflix also stars John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome and Ben Schwartz, alongside co-stars Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow and Don Lake.
