Deemed a "successful failure," Apollo 13 (April 11 - 17, 1970) was planned as the third manned lunar landing mission. An explosion from within the Service Module forced James Lovell, John "Jack" Swigert, and Fred Haise to abort the mission, circle the Moon and return to Earth.

The attached segment of cord was cut by North American Recovery Team member Ossie Reid from one of the three 833 foot main parachutes flown on Apollo 13.
