LDEF Tomato Seeds

Mission: Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF)

Launch: April 6, 1984
STS-41C Challenger

Landing: January 20, 1990
STS-32 Columbia

Duration: 5 years, 9 months, 14 days
Comment: Completed 32,422 Earth orbits

This packet holds tomato seeds that were flown on-board the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) in Canister 5 (layers C and D) under a thermal cover in the school bus- size cylindrical satellite's peripheral tray. These seeds are from among the 12.5 million that were in orbit for nearly 6 years - five more than was originally planned as a result of postponements and the loss of Space Shuttle Challenger.
