The Mission: A True Story
by David W. Brown
How a disciple of Carl Sagan, an ex-motocross racer, a Texas Tea Party congressman, the world's worst typewriter saleswoman, California mountain people, and an anonymous NASA functionary went to war with Mars, repelled insurgents from Saturn, crossed swords with Washington, and hitched a ride on an Alabama moon rocket to send a space robot to Jupiter in search of the second Garden of Eden at the bottom of an alien ocean inside of an ice world called Europa (a true story).

  • ISBN-10: 006265442X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0062654427
From David Brown's Author's Guild page:
My upcoming book, "The Mission," will be published in 2020 by Custom House, an imprint of HarperCollins. It is a work of creative nonfiction, and tells the story of a plucky group of scientists who have spent their lives convincing NASA to send a spaceship to Europa, the ocean moon of Jupiter.

"Creative nonfiction"? What on Earth is that?

Think Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," Truman Copote's "In Cold Blood" and Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff."

Quoting Wikipedia, though there are numerous resources on this, including university and library guides.

Creative nonfiction (also known as literary nonfiction or narrative nonfiction or verfabula) is a genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives. Creative nonfiction contrasts with other nonfiction, such as academic or technical writing or journalism, which is also rooted in accurate fact but is not written to entertain based on prose style.

Not to be confused with a historical novel, which is a novel written around historical fact.

This book, by the way, is on shelves now, and is well worth the read. A very engaging account of how the Europa Clipper mission went from a long-thwarted desire to explore the icy Jovian moon to an actual funded mission.
