I am just looking at the new giclee art print of the "Longest Four Minutes I Ever Spent" by Mark Karvon.

Am I wrong? I think they did the lunar orbit burn on the dark side of the moon right? Still very impressive though! Thanks!

Nice print. Remember the back side can be sunlit, it's just not visible from Earth.

Nice print but a bit pricey in the larger format. Would look good signed, as an alternative to Homeward Bound.

I was surfing the internet and came across this thread. In answer to the question posed, the back side of the moon was in sunlight when Apollo 8 reached the moon. While I did take some artistic liberty with the exhaust plume to make the piece more visually exciting (if it is good enough for Robert McCall, it is good enough for me), for the most part it is an accurate depiction of Apollo 8 right down to the steam venting to cool the electronics. I spent many hours thoroughly researching the mission to make sure the details are correct.

For anyone interested, the complete mission transcript is available online through NASA here. It is very fascinating to read the detailed procedure the men had to go through in order to carry out the maneuver to fire the service propulsion engine and enter lunar orbit.

All my prints are printed via the giclee process. When compared with comparable sizes for other giclee prints on the market, they are an very good value for the money. The giclee printing process is more expensive per print than the traditional litograph and offers exceptional color and clarity. The prints are done by a professional printer who has been in the business over 30 years. He holds a degree in chemical engineering and he is an expert in inks. The result is a print of excellent quality.

Mark Karvon

edit: changed "Bruce" to "Robert".

Gil, Mark is referring to McCall's "Coming Home" painting from 1969.

The painting is a bird's eye view of the Apollo 8 spacecraft firing the SPS to leave lunar orbit. It's a beautiful work.

You can see the painting at this website.

Slightly incorrect or not, it is a very good looking piece. Artwork can be a little stylized since ultimately it is a "perception" of things instead of a photograph (just like the movie "Apollo 13" is stylized, compared to a documentary of Apollo 13).

Pricey? No, in my opinion this piece is very reasonably priced and very well executed by the artist. If I collected signed prints I would be happy to add this to my collection.

Mark - beautiful work. On par with McCall, Calle, Bean, Hengeveld and Rockwell, in my opinion.

Jay I'm curious what you meant by slightly inaccurate. I'll admit I'm not an expert, but it looks perfect to me.

I just found Mark's work a few months ago when surfing. It looks pretty amazing. I was looking to purchase a couple of his prints so I could have them signed if I do the ASF show this fall. Really great work.

Tim I think Jay was referring to the stylized exhaust plume. The McCall piece takes this even further (very nicely).
