I have been a lurker on this forum for a few months but thought it was about time I made a post and contributed... I have seen a few posts about framing suggestions for Alan Bean canvas prints, so I thought I would post some of my framed prints with a brief description. When I had my first print framed (Mother Earth) I agonised at my local gallery for almost an hour, trying all types of wood and painted frames. Eventually I tried a black wooden frame which was painted in a 'distressed' silver finish. immediately I knew this was my choice. I chose a black matte surrounded over a border in a middle blue colour, the effect once framed was excellent, at least to my eyes. I then had 'A Beautiful Moon' framed exactly the same but chose the bordering matte surround as a purple/pinkish colour. This looked even better than the first effort. When I acquired 'One Giant Leap,' this was already on stretch bars so I simply chose the same frame, minus the glass and matte border. Lastly, I would like to show 'Armstrong, Aldrin and an American Eagle.' For this, my fifth acquisition, I wanted something that drew the viewer into the picture, rather than complimented the picture. I chose a plain black, fairly nondescript wooden frame with a purple inner frame, again, at least to my taste, I think I nailed it! Thoughts, feedback and pictures of other collectors' framed prints would be welcomed. Anyone wanting better photos of these framed prints I am happy to email. |

Usually I dislike "distressed" finishes on things like frames and furniture- to me, it just looks "faketique." But it really was the right choice for these prints. It brings to mind the Apollo suits, and to a lesser degree the spacecraft. I'll have to remember this when I finally get a Bean print. |

Thanks for the comments, I agree about the faketique, and I never gave this frame a second look at first, but when it was placed next to the print there was an unexpected synergy of sorts. I'll post another example of a print I had framed tomorrow... |

The gold frame compliments the Earthrise print perfectly, as does the frame for the Eagle ascent print. |

Pat, the frame for the Earthrise is actually the same silver one as the other two, I didn't use a flash on that photo so there was a warming effect from the overhead light... |

Is that glass over two of the prints? Kim from Novaspace could explain better, but I've been told that you don't want to do that with canvas as they can trap moisture and cause the material to mold. |

Ummm, yes, it's glass, but its well sealed at the back. Nonetheless, I have read this 'no glass' comment twice now so I'm a little worried... I may go back to the framer and investigate a plan B. |

Wonderful pictures Chris. I've used the gold Mylar film that is sold at Kennedy Space Centre and others, scrunched up then wrapped round a thin inner mount like the purple one you've used, it can add a little "warm techiness." |

Yes, a number of framing rules have been broken, though I can appreciate the creativity here. I'll say it's best not to strike off pell-mell, but do so in consultation with an expert.Kim Poor |

I like that last one. The dark frame goes nicely with the dark sky of the LM launching.(That would look pretty nice on my wall too!) |
