Six-time space shuttle astronaut Story Musgrave's first flight in a Northrop T-38 Talon supersonic training jet was aboard NASA 906 in 1967, 42 years ago.

Over the course of the past four decades, Musgrave photographed his and others' flights, as well as the jet's ground operations, to try to catch "the spirit" of the T-38, which he describes an "elegant work of art" and an "eternal classic."

In celebration of the T-38's 50 year anniversary, Musgrave has again collaborated with his authorized biographer and her husband, Anne and Lance Lenehan, to present his photography and text in "The NASA Northrop T-38: Photographic Art from an Astronaut Pilot" to be released in March.

"We grew to push the aircraft and ourselves to the edge but never beyond," writes Musgrave in the book. "Like restless folks, we kept raising the bar, decade after decade, we always found another peak to climb. We went together on the journey with an absolute faith in ourselves and the machine."

Musgrave's collection of private photographs puts you right in the middle of the action. For the space enthusiast and photographer, Musgrave provides a first-hand account of the people and planes, providing an insight into the culture of the NASA flying world.

At 266 pages, most filled with full color photos, the hardcover "The NASA Northrop T-38: Photographic Art from an Astronaut Pilot" will sell for $49.95.

For more previews, see www.t38jet.com

In support of collectSPACE.com's 10th anniversary, Story Musgrave has offered to sign copies for our readers if ordered through the site. Though we will not be taking advance orders, if you are interested in purchasing signed copies when available, please let us know via e-mail.

YES!!!!

The T-38, in my opinion, belongs in the Museum of Modern Art. There's nothing one could add, subtract, or alter that would aesthetically improve its clean, classic lines, and the NASA paint scheme perfectly accentuates them. If any airplane deserves an "art book" dedicated to its form, the T-38 does. Thanks to Story Musgrave, now we have one. Cool.

A tour has not been mentioned, though Amazon will be offering the book unsigned and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will be stocking signed copies (given Story's frequent appearances as part of their Astronaut Encounter events).

The book will also be available through Story's websites.

Story is not coming to Houston to sign the books for collectSPACE but rather the autographed books will be shipped to us from his publisher's distribution facility.

I attended a presentation by Story in Columbus Georgia over the summer. Part of his presentation contained imagery from this book which he also discussed in some detail.

He is one eclectic, fun, and talented dude.

Thanks. The book is called "Spirit of Flight" according to the Lannistoria web site and the video from t38.com.

"Spirit of Flight" must have been a working title. I've seen the book and its title is as noted above, "The NASA Northrop T-38: Photographic Art from an Astronaut Pilot".

I'm looking forward to reading the new book that Story Musgrave is publishing, He is just an outstanding person, one of our favorites out of the astronauts from that era, and certainly one of the most intelligent. When we saw him at the Reading Museum, here in Reading, Pa., Story even remembered our surname. We had two NASA glossies and a few other photos which we gave him to use for autographs. Story immediately commented that he was only signing "Story" as he did in his first book because of people reselling on ebay, etc. I informed him that we came to see him and not to get autographs, having all that we needed signed and inscribed using his full name (not the famous autopen).

However, for something like a book, I feel that Story is being short sighted and reducing sales if he doesn't sign his full name this time. I'm also sure that his publisher will tell him that. Many collectors commented about that issue when his last book was issued. We would not consider ever selling or trading anything from our core collection (including not one, but two Armstrong signed items), but I wouldn't buy Story's new book at the issue price unless he signs his full name. This of course is just our personal opinion. I find that all the astronaut published books, even autographed ones, sooner or later show up with overrun book dealers and used book sales, sometimes for $1 each. I just found Linenger's autographed book in a used book store with the autograph being missed.

We've just received word from Story that the T-38 books signed for Boggs SpaceBooks® and for collectSPACE will be signed with his full name.

All others will be first name only.

Tamara and I find this to be an enormously gracious gift on his part. We hope it will be honored and respected.

Miranda and I attended a day time lecture this morning by Story. His talk included a slide show and he spoke of having more time in the T-38 than anyone else. His slide show included lots of photos of the T-38. Story also mentioned his love of photography and how he always had a camera with him.

I was not sure I was going to purchase this book but now I am sure I will. If that slide show was a preview of the book then it will be worth it.

Story was scheduled to give two daytime lectures today then one for the public tonight. Miranda has a basketball game tonight so I made arrangements with the Director of the Bowlus Center and she let Miranda and I set in on the talk this morning.

When the talk was over we left the balcony by going down the fire escape, which put us right in front of the stage.

Story was talking with a few people then when they left it was just Story and Mianda and myself in the whole auditorum. We chatted for about 10 minutes and we talked about this new book. He talked of flying to the publisher and doing the book signings for cS and for the Boggs. He seemed like he was looking forward to it.

It was a neat way to spend the day with my daughter.

The book is really really good. The pictures are first rate and very interesting and artistic. The stories/thoughts that goes with the photos are well done and typical Story. I would highly reccommend it

The private book signing was today and Story was generous enough to stop and spend quite a bit of time telling the backstory for many of the pictures.

This is a tremendous volume. It represents 42 years of Story's photography of the T-38 in the air and on the ground. He may well have been the only astronaut ever to take pictures of the T-38.

If your order from us after reading this post, please be sure to mention collectSPACE so that it receives credit for the purchase.

Just received my copy from Bogg's... fast service, mailed on the 18th and rec'd this morning here in Tucson on the 20th. Thanks, Don!

The book is excellent. Photos really great. Serviced a lot of the NASA Talon's back in the day. Nice to see a lot of old tail #'s again in the art of flight. Worth the cost...

Highly reccomend... JPS

Story handed me the book to look at during his talk today. It is filled with great pictures. I think that it will be a great add to my collection. In reading some of the earlier posts, why does he only sign his first name? I noticed that in the picture he signed for me today but thought nothing of it at the time.

Story signed his full name quite large and in blue marker.

After further review of the book all I can say is "FANTASTIC" the photography is superb!!! The limited text and captions are great.

I now find myself going through my slides locating all the NASA aircraft I photographed through my Air Force life.

The NASA 38's were my favorite. Have some great items (hardware wise) in my collection.

All my moonwalker and other astronaut autographs were obtained on the flightline. I dealt with a lot of astronauts and received a lot of patches, photos and such. Made some really good contacts. Paid off really well.

My friend and I attended Story's lecture in Michigan yesterday morning. We brought along several photos to be signed and he had no problem signing his full name for us when we asked him. He commented that he had just signed 1500 books at the publisher earlier this week. He was a bit under the weather but still gave a great talk on space and the sixties for the local college is celebrating the 60's this month with lectures and musical performances.

We were able to spend several minutes talking with Story as he showed us his new T-38 book with it's stunning images. He was also selling his book of images of Australia from space.

He may be the smartest person I have met having 7 graduate degrees but he was very down to earth and willing to answer any question we had. He didn't pull any punches talking about how great the Mercury-Gemini-Apollo-Sklab era was for the US and that we have since lost the vision to explore beyond our own planet since the end of the Space Race. He spoke highly of Von Braun and the personal realtionship he had with him.

Story is so full of life and energy I highly recommend seeing him speak if you have the opportunity to. Plus pick up a copy of his new T-38 book for the images are amazing!

My copy arrived today and I stopped everything to look through it. "Beautiful" is the only word I can come up with, and I mean that not just for the photographs. Anybody who's ever considered an airplane to be a living, breathing creature (especially anyone who's thought that while at the controls) will understand.

Thanks to Story Musgrave for sharing all this with us in a wonderful book (and for signing it). Thanks also to Donald and Tamara Boggs for making the signing a possibility (and for the prompt service), and thanks to Robert for his part in it all, too.

Received mine today... typical speedy Boggs service. All I can do is say "wow" and echo what other posters here feel. It's a spectacular production. Also, our graphic designer who (in addition to being a fellow space junkie) has an art degree and moonlights as a professional photographer, was very impressed as well. So much so that he said he may order a copy for himself (of course I referred him to cS and boggsspace.com).

Thanks again to the "Renaissance astronaut" and his publishers for producing such a gorgeous book, and thanks to Don and Tamara for making the signed edition available.

Thank you to Don and Tamara at Boggs Space Books. My copy of this great book arrived safely in Australia yesterday.

Another example of the excellent service provided by Don and Tamara. Some of us in various parts of the world would have little chance of buying signed copies of some of the great books that are released without these kind and helpful people.

Thank you again and all the best from Orstralia.
