Hi all! New here, nice to be here!

My question is relatively simple: I am looking for a good, accurate general encyclopedia on manned spaceflight--both US and USSR efforts.

Ideally, the book I'd like to get would give a history of missions (especially pre-1981), spacecraft diagrams etc.

Any suggestions? Many thanks!!

I guess "Praxis Manned Spaceflight Log 1961-2006" at 800 pages plus would be a good start.

David Baker's The History of Manned Space Flight is an excellent book.

I agree with John: you can't find a better book on the pre-Shuttle era than David Baker's book...

John and Ed, I totally agree!

Because it was written pre-glasnost, the Soviet programme entries do not contain as much of the detail we are now privy to, but it is an accurate reflection of western knowledge at the time and gives a good overview.

However, the US coverage, pre shuttle, is second to none, a lot of the details difficult (if not impossible) to find elsewhere, certainly between two covers.
Bakers "History of Manned Spaceflight" - truly indispensable!

Some of the best books (and you can buy) are on the NASA history office site. I recommend the NASA Historical Data Books and John Logston's Exploring the Unknown: Selected Documents in Space History. There are several volumes of these. I have all of them.

The original works:
  • Manned Spaceflight Log by Tim Furniss
  • JANE's 1986 (160 glossy pages with a crew photo for each US and USSR mission between Vostok 1 and Soyuz T-15) ISBN 0-7106-0402-5

Philip, are you referring to JANE's Spaceflight Directory? The first editions are a must have (the ones edited by Reginald Turnill).

Another book: "The Soviet Manned Space Programme: An Illustrated History of the Men, the Missions and the Spacecraft" by Phillip Clark, Salamander Book, 1988, 192p, ISBN 0 86101 369 7

As for the most current general books - the new two book set from Apogee - "Astronautics", is good - though they miss a lot on illustrations.
