I've gotten a handful of books over the past few years from my ex-wife--she's a librarian, and she has passed on some volumes on space flight that the library was discarding. They've been in storage during that time, and have just emerged back into the light since I finally got bookshelves up in my newest place.Anyway, there's a few I'm not familiar with, other than vague recollections of possibly hearing the titles. They include: "The Voyages of Apollo," by Lewis; "The Race," by Schefter; "Rockets Into Space," by Winter; "Chariots For Apollo," by Pellegrino and Stoff; and a volume called "Pioneering the Space Frontier," which has no publication date that I can find but is subtitled "The Report of the National Commission on Space." So, any opinions on any of these? Which are worth my time, or can be passed up without missing anything of worth? |

"Pioneering the Space Frontier" was a great read, especially after the Challenger accident, of what the future of the US space program could have been (retrospectively it's depressing to see that nothing came out of it). An online version exists but it looks awful. Interesting to keep in view of the Moon/Mars initiative."The Race" by James Schefter is also on my shelf but it's the kind of book that I could live without. But I can't remember why Chris. |

I'll second what Chris said re: "Pioneering the Space Frontier." I remember rushing to buy a copy and poring over it in fascination and anticipation of great adventures to come.Oh well. For those of us who have grown up in the post-Apollo era, disappointment seems to be a big part of our lot. Anyway, I have read "The Race" and "Chariots for Apollo"* and enjoyed both, though I found them to be occasionally "dishy" almost to the point of sensationalism. Both are fun reads, just don't take everything therein as Gospel truth. *Not to be confused with the official NASA history of the same title, which is rare and pricey in good condition. |

We'd echo what has already been said, but would add that Lewis' book is an excellent period piece, capturing the flavor of the times as well as the mission. Quite strong.------------------ Donald & Tamara Boggs Boggs SpaceBooks http://boggsspace.com |

I have The Race and Chariots for Apollo. Both are great reads and are very informative. They are both worth your time.Randy | |
