I have a space shuttle painting called "Challenger's Glory." This is a limited edition of 850 by British artist Chris Neale. Mine is also signed by Bob Overmyer, the last commander of Challenger before the ill-fated 51L flight.

I wonder if anyone can identify the island. Despite years of looking I have failed though it supposed to be an accurate portrayal of Challenger's ground track.

Actually Hank Hartsfield was the last commander of Challenger before 51-L. Hartsfield flew on 61-A.

Looks like Crete to me, but thats way off track.

The answer is actually on his website:
That brown shape - bottom right is actually an island off the "Horn of Africa" called Socotra (Republic of Yemen)... a lot of people seem to think it's the shadow cast by Challenger itself.... which was typically at an altitude of 300 kilometres above the ground... think about it!

For an island that is only 80 miles long it looks mighty enormous from 300km up!

That's correct it looks pretty big. But I certainly like the way the orbiter is depicted!
