Former astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz (STS-61C, 34, 46, 60, 75, 91, 111) has published the first volume of his three-part memoirs, "Los Primeros Años" ("The First Years"):
"The First Years" is an account of my childhood from my earliest memories, while growing up in Venezuela and Costa Rica, through my adolescence and up until the very day that I left Costa Rica to follow my dream in the United States. It is the first book in a trilogy that I plan to complete relating the phases of my life, including many adventures, happy times, failures, successes and losses. In this first book, I have tried to explore the forces that shaped my imagination and formed my identity through the earliest portions of my life. I believe a large measure of my good fortune was due to the help that I received from many others during these formative years. So I hope that this book can, in some way, help others who are now looking for their path toward their dreams.
As hinted by its title, "Los Primeros Años" is written in Spanish. According to Chang-Diaz, the next two volumes, which will focus more on his spaceflight career, will be in English.

"Los Primeros Años" is not normally available in the U.S., limited to mostly Costa Rican stores, but Chang-Diaz's website also notes the book can be ordered through his rocket company, Ad Astra in Houston.

From what I understand, only the second and third books will be available in English.

This is odd. The three volumes in Spanish and/or English would have made more sense than to split them into two languages. No publisher found for the English version of the first volume (and a Spanish one for the other two)? Very, very strange.

All times are CT (US)
