Air & Space / Smithsonian (Aug/Sept 2005) has just published my profile of John Young. I'd be interested in any reactions and comments if any of you have a chance to read it.

Thanks!

I read that last week. It was a brilliant article. I need to re-read it again now that I finished the T-38 article.

Thank you so much for the great job.

I too fully enjoyed the article. Also, check out the blurb in the front sectioonm about the astronauts finding something smelly and the people at NASA who use there nose to further explore the universe.

I am about half way through my second reading of this article. The statistical dangers of spaceflight were a bit of a surprise to me. Of particular interest was the part about an Apollo flight to the Moon only having a 20% chance of returning safely per some internal study that his wife was privy to. If I recall correctly, John stated that he believed the higher ups NASA let the last three Moon flights get cancelled based more on caution than out of budget issues. He goes on to state that the belief was that the scientific rewards did not stand up against the risk of losing a crew.

This was a brilliant article about a man who had his hands in American spaceflight for so long. I do hope that a book does come forth from John Young. For that matter, I hope he publishes many different books.
