Just watched "Marooned" for the first time in probably 30+ years. It's now on DVD. Interesting film, it stays as close to reality as it can for the time. There are some heavy hitters in starring roles. I don't know what kind of budget it had, but the art direction is pretty good for 1969! I'm no expert, but it looks like the MOCR. The launch stuff is obviously borrowed footage and the EVAs with no tether are a bit of a stretch. Anyone know if those scenes of Houston control were on location or mock-ups? It would seem interesting if NASA offered the MOCR for filming a movie with this premise. Anyone?

I think this movie won an Academy Award for best special effects or something like that. It is a great movie.

Long, slow, and boring...

Best special effects went to 2001 in 1968 and to Marooned in 1970. Does anybody--anybody at all?--think that the special effects in Marooned look like anything other than models hanging on a string against a black background?

I prefer the MST3K version, where they expressed total befuddlement that a movie with an all-star high-power cast is just incredibly dull.

I think I do remember reading something about the Lovell's going to see this film and regreting it. Still wondering if NASA was involved in the location shooting, especially the MOCR stuff.

I remember going to see the movie on the big screen and loving it. But hey I was 12 years old at the time. I've seen it recently and it does suffer a bit with age because of the advances in FX.

The story with the Lovells is that Marilyn didn't like the fact that the CDR named Jim Pruett (note the similarity in the names) sacrifices himself for his crew.

I think that the MST3K version had the classic line "Oh, it has Hackman in it. That means it's got to be good!"

According to Satellite News, today marks the 39th anniversary of the release of Marooned.

I, too, prefer the MST3K version. Crow (Trace Beaulieu) does a killer Gregory Peck impression, and the List of Advancements from the Space Program is golden.

When Marooned came out, I was stunned. It was great for the time. But it wasn't the book.

It was the Apollo Applications Program lab (wet Workshop), not Skylab.

What you see onboard the station was the MacDac original concepts, and some were better than the wet workshop mockups at Marshall Center. When the filming was going on, legend says that the Air Force assisted the Sturges' film by conducting it's first night launch of a Titan IIIC.

In the original story - not the film - Pruett was stranded in orbit in a Mercury capsule and rescued by a Gemini.

It is said that Wally Schirra read the book and told Caidin that it contained one technical error.

I've always assumed that this referred to the moment that Pruett blew the hatch and the consequences of this on orbital parameters and spacecraft attitudes.

Am I correct or is there a technical error I have missed.

The film's credits include the following:
We wish to express our appreciation to the Philco-Ford Corporation for providing technical personnel, and for constructing the Houston Mission Control Center and the Air Force Launch Control Center.

Anyone know the episode name on Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) for the Marooned bit? It sounds worth tracking down. Thank you.

You can purchase many of the episodes on DVD. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them.

However, I did find it here if you don't mind watching a bad videotape of it.

I have no idea why they retitled Marooned as "Space Travelers" when it was re-released in 1994. I understand that is its public domain title.
