Last week, I won an eBay auction for a signed photo of Jim Lovell as a Boy Scout. It interested me because he had signed it as "Jimmy Lovell," which I thought was really unique and interesting. It reminded me of a Neil Armstrong autograph I saw on Heritage a few years ago. By this point, Neil had stopped signing autographs. But someone sent him a long letter, along with a photo of Neil with Mickey Mouse. Neil broke his rule and signed the photo, but signed it as Mickey instead. I really loved it. I couldn't afford it at the time, but it ended up not selling. This all leads to two questions. First, are these variant autographs worth less than standard autographs? I'm really drawn to these types of things, and yet the two examples above had little interest from buyers. I wonder if the atypical nature of them detracts from the value. And second, does anyone have anything similar in their collection? I'd love to see a thread with unique or humorous signatures like these.

The closest I have is a Pat Forrester holding up Buzz Lightyear signed by Forrester and Tim Allen; President Jimmy Carter shaking the hand of Joe Tanner signed by both; and Anton Shkaplerov holding the zero-G indicator of Olaf signed by him and Josh Gad.Years ago I had Buzz Aldrin sign a photo of his character from The Simpsons, but had to sell it. | |
